Col. Crackpot wrote:let me just say that the fucking demon is the shit! I have one tricked out pretty much as far as you can (2 ion cannons and two neutron guns, anything bigger uses too much power and she won't carry a heavy reactor) and that sonofabitch will hit 1100 kps at full afterburn!
That doesn't sound very tricked out. Anyway the Demon is fucking badass. After trying out both the Centurion and the Demon, I have to say the Demon utterly kicks ass.
Anyway, buy a Milspec Demon if you can afford it, or I should say you should have saved for that one. It comes with several options standard and actualy saves you money. Go to Perry and buy Tachyon guns. They have a fast refire rate, are fast, and have good damage. Best gun in the game. Thats why they are only available at Perry or onboard a Paradigm. They are milspec weapons.
The Demon is especialy nasty when you get a good sensor array and get auto tracking turrets. Who the fuck needs missiles?
I've compared a tricked out Centurion vs a tricked out Demon, and the Demon is clearly better. The Centurion and Demon have equal reactor power, equal guns. The Centurion has one level stronger on shields, can carry a turret, and carries more then twice as many missiles.
And yet the Demon is better. The Demon has is 50 speed slower at normal flight, but is 200 speed faster at Afterburner. It accelerates faster and is more manueverable. Because of this you can get through combat that gets a Centurion killed. A Centurion's rear turret is nice, but doesn't make up for the Demon's speed and manueverability. The Cent's missiles are practicaly pointless unless you expect to go up against a Kamehk.

I saw a Dray for sale at New Detroit. I have only ever seen it there once, but it's the only place I know of.

I'm reasonably certain I have seen Draymans available at ship dealers in Troy.
What I haven't seen so far is anything but Draymans, Galaxies, Tarsuses, Demons, Orions, and Centurions, so any hints on when/where/how to buy Broadswords/Stilettos/Gladiuses etc will be welcome.

Buy one what? Stiletto, Broadsword or Paradigm (and a reminder of what the Paradigm was wouldn't hurt, either)?
If I have to basically finish the game (as per Cyborg Stan's post)before being able to buy those that's kinda pointless I think

my demon also has the best radar and ECM, auto repair, maxxed out shields and reactor ( i can sustain 1200 KPS indefinately), a hidden contraband compartment , thrust and manuverability enhancements... i am a bad motherfucker.

The Demon is an absolute badass ship.
Though I look forward to getting a Broadsword. Imagine 3 Tachyon guns with auto aim. 3 Tachyon turrets, maxed out reactors and shields... That thing would eat anything else alive.

I don't see how anyone can beat this game. How the fuck can I take on a dozen Dralthi all on my own and survive?

Heh. That's a neat trick even in a Rapier in WC1, and that bird was built to slaughter Dralthis.

I'm currently stuck on the 3rd exploration mission. I get jumped by a dozen or so Dralthi right when I enter Gama and its a fucking nightmare. I can't even hope to fight the fucks and I have to use a Demon so I can speed beyond them. I am tempted to try grabbing a Galaxy and fitting it for combat with turrets to see how it handles itself.

Don't bother with the galaxy idea. I was using a souped up galaxy with turrets before I bought a demon myself. It's just not that good.
It's slow, so you won't be able to excape from battles. The turrets only help marginally because they don't lead the target. The only time it will be able to hit is from head on or directly behind. It's a merchie, not a combat ship.
You would have trouble taking on three Dralthri, nevermind a dozen.

Mice are icky for flying games.

Note to self : when the bounty mission says that the ship has 16 capital ships for protection, it's actually the case. I wish I took a screenshot. Luckily, they were slow and started out in a straight line.
And by the way, even if you can only get the Confed's stuff at the end of the normal game, this game seemlessly goes into Righteous Fire. Just hop off to Jolson at XXN-19something.
And if you think Tachyon guns are good, try putting Fusion guns on your ship. There's nothing quite like delivering a death sentence at full afterburner.

But they also seem to offer better accuity and control (at least in my experience, anyway). With a mouse, you can make snap adjustments to your aim and have more motion resistance when running across the desk, which also gives one a good sense of where they're currently at and going. Joysticks, while easier on the wrist, always felt rather lax, and you'd have to twitch it a whole bunch of times in order to get it on the target whilst one or two motions with the mouse will do the same in faster time.
And now, back to my
Privateer-download-induced stupor.
Whee...

Also, a bit of warning - it seems to be some sort of bug, but I suspect loading a game that's before the Righteous Fire campaign after you start it in another might mean that you can't buy the RF upgrades anymore.
