It used to be in X-wing that you could blow up TIEs just by hitting them with your ion cannons.
TIEs self-destructed when disabled in the original X-Wing. Annoyed the hell out of me, but I learned to put just enough shots in there to shut down the engines without disabling the thing and activating self-destruct. Works wonders in keeping follow-up waves from coming at you, if you can just keep your wingmen off of 'em.
I'd prefer a large scale space game that is more like Battlefield 1942. You can command any fighter, capship, ground assault vehicle, etc, and you are a individual character of your choice (StormTrooper, Pilot, Tech, etc).

And if your mission was to destroy certain TIE wings, it became unwinnable. (since "technically" they weren't destroyed).
Yeah, I know, that pissed me off. Especially since they counted as destroyed for the purposes of sending the next wave out, but not for the purposes of the mission goals. What the hell was up with that?
That's stupid. We know Naboo fighters had proton torpedos that were blue. Rebel Alliance torps are red/orange? WTF? Do they produce their own? Or do they buy their supplies wherever they can get it? The films show that there are at least two kinds of torpedos, blue and red/orange. It's a question of ordinance acquisition, not 'Rebel Trademark'.
Yeah, and Naboo fighters also had green lasers. TIE Bombers drop blue ordnance (TESB). See what I mean?

Go play Battlefront. We're talking about Tie Fighter here....

ARG.
I HATED that in X-Wing. Not the disabling idea. But if you disabled a TIE and it detonated, it didn't count as a kill, only as a target disabled, even when it blew up. So if you had an objective, say to destroy Tie Fighter Group ALPHA, and ion cannoned even ONE of the, that objective is failed.

Are you kidding?
How about RETAKING CORUSCANT? How about fighting over Coruscant? The Battle of Duro where the Chimaera is lost. It goes on and on. DE probably comprehends the most combat of any phase of the Galactic Civil War.

Sorry? What the heck was this? Chimaera is still happily puttering around in the THrwan Duology and the NJO (she gets beaten up badly in one of the Force Heritic books, but she comes through). She was never lost, I'm sure she is explictly said to be the same ship Thrawn commanded, with many of the same crew members as well.
TIE Fighter had it's AI ... moments; I remember my wingman blew up the Emperor's Assault Shuttle in the final mission, after I had disabled it. Damn Rebel sympathisers!
Oh, and I dunno if it fits the setting, but a micro-FTL would be handy, for when you end up 20km from the mission objectives, and it takes you fucking ages to fly over there (especially in a Missile Boat, when you're also trying to charge up its shields from it's piddly single cannon).
My favourite ship was the Assault Gunboat. Verging on 'wankalot' fighter status, but painfully slow; The first few missions in one of those, I died more often than in a TIE, because it was harder to shake off the X-Wings.
"So you want to live on a planet?"
"No. I think I'd find it a bit small and wierd."
"Aren't they dangerous? Don't they get hit by stuff?"

Actually, the Chimaera was heavily damaged in battle and Pellaeon was forced to abandon the ship. The NR fixed her up, and then Pellaeon stole her back.

Hell, that in itself could make an interesting mission.
...You're right. I'm not sure about the specifics of how Pellaeon stole the Chimaera, but I'd imagine that fighter support will be needed to keep the NR off the Chimaera's back while the commandoes make off with her from under the NR's nose.
