Except he forgot to account for the fact that livestock needs lots of grazing land, so not only are you killing the animals but you're also plowing huge fields and killing the wildlife in them in order to let this livestock graze. Hence, people who eat meat still kill far more animals than people who don't.

I eat beef and chicken too, but that's no excuse for making bullshit arguments. At most, Maddox's argument means that vegans have less ground for feeling morally superior than they think. It does not mean their argument has been nullified.

I'm probably in a small minority in that I don't really care what happens to animals that are processed for food or products or used for testing, other than random cruelty that isn't part of standard procedure.

If you carry his 'argument' (that's giving it a lot more credit than it deserves) to its illogical extreme, then we're mass-murderers simply for the poor helpless microorganisms that our digestive systems annihilate no matter what we eat! Yes, the extremist PETA-style vegans are out there in a place I can't and won't go ... but the most health-conscious people I know aren't vegans, they just make sure they eat reasonably sized portions and a balanced diet, including a reasonable amount of protein sources including meat.

I'm in a financial position where I can pay a little more for eggs and chicken that is humanely raised, and for organic beef and pork and milk, so I do ... but if the store I'm shopping at doesn't have those things, you know what, I still buy eggs & milk & beef.

Which is pretty much what Maddox said. He implicitly acknowledged that wheat harvesting kills less than animal farming does (or, at the very least, never tried to argue the fact); the entire rant's purpose is just to point out that animals still die under the vegans' solution. It's aimed squarely at the extreme vegans who believe any killing of animals is unjustifiable; not the more sensible ones who'd argue that fewer are killed than with animal farming.
