Interesting thread.

The attempt I made with this ranking system was a place a relative fairness between those whith high post counts compared to those who had been there a long time. It was a way to make it so that newbies with 5,000 posts in 6 months weren't considered equal to 3 year veterans with only 4,000 posts.

I got that number of 27 by going to the person with the highest post count at SB (not Tron, he "cheated" for his) and took their average posts per day. That 27 then became the standard for multiplication of your days on the board. What it did was reward you with the equivilant of 27 posts for every day you have been on the board regardless if you posted that much or not. Then you combine your post count with this number and you get your ranking.

For SD.net you will have to choose someone else to base the "handicap" off of.

We have Mr. Bean and Verlion. I hesitate to use Verlion for the fact that he posts so much it would skew the results to a large degree. Bean averages 46 posts per day.

I have been at SD.net for 111 days. Multiply that buy 46 and you get 5106. Add to that my post count of 1483 and my rank becomes 6589.

Bean comes out massively higher because he posts a lot and has been here longer.

Alyeska, for the most part I agree with your ranking system, but I think that you should make some provision for long-time ASVS members to have their seniority boosted. Many of them have been debating more than any of the rest of us, and I think that the system should have some method of supporting that.

Incidentally, everyone please remember that they should not necessarily discriminate against newbies just because they are new. There are some very talented, knowledgable, and intelligent people out there whom I do not wish to discourage by using a seniority system to put down.

Indeed, it was nothing more then a rough system at best. There are people at SB who can become VERY high ranking for the simple reason they have been members since 1996.

The problem with ASVS is I don't have access to debate nor is there records of every message (post). Someone would have to attempt to collect this information before ASVS members could have their rank identified. Regardless, I think that ASVS members should NOT be ranked for their ASVS work, but only their SD work. I have almost three years of time at SB but I don't try and use it to combine with my SD rank.

Shinova wrote:Give all credit to Alyeska, who developed this formula over at SB during a story debate. Here's the original quote:

Take your total post count, devide it by your posts per day rating. That will give you the number of days you have been registered at SB. Then multiply the number of days you have been at SB by 27 (to account for time at SB) and then add that number to your post count. That gives you your ranking number.

Ignoring your actual post count, what this ranking does is awards you 27 points for every day you have been registered at SB, each post you have is also a point.
My attempt to simplify this:

post count / posts per day = A;
A x 27 = B;
B + post count = ranking number.

For me, I got 2510.

Let's see....

4514

Doing it that way, I get about 7400.

Hmm, you have been here only a little more then a month longer then me and have 1/3 the posts.

I am starting to think that 27 does seem to be a nice round number to augment the number of days as a member.

As I said before, it seems that going for to high a number skews the results. People who have been here just a handful of months longer have easily double or triple as others.

27 does seem to be a relatively well ballanced number.

7683 under the new system. I like it. :twisted:

Have a very nice day.

Ok people, you can stop using the "new" system. 27 seems to be the correct number.

Bah you and your three days more than I existence. You beat me to ASVS and to SB and now to SD.net. I shall forever hold the deepest cold hatred to you for that :)
