Super-dreadnaughts... heh heh. Well destroyers shouldn't be able to get close to super-dreadnaughts anyway. By the time you have them you should have warp point openers, unless they've built system gravitational facilities, and if so I say the game's gone too long

. It's not really a counter, super dreadnaughts will kill destroyers in one round, maybe several of them with tracking.
I'm not sure if this is fixed in 1.91 too. Boarding parties V count as 100 guys, crew quarters count as 16 and even super dreadnaughts will lose to 6 boarding parties.
Plus... security stations are far more powerful anyway. 220 guys with security station V.
Hotfoot wrote:Still lame, in my opinion. A 10kt device utterly negating several 20kt devices. Same problem is why missiles are broken in the stock game (one 20kt device negating several 50kt devices).
Boarding parties are a novelty just like missiles are a novelty in stock, the only thing worth it in the long run are direct-fire weapons. Unless, you are trying what Nepyhts saw, using a warp point to get first shot, boarding parties are useless.

This looks interesting. Before I jump in though, could I get a recommendation on race?
I'm not very familiar with the lesser-known Star Trek races and am after one I can RP as being arrogant and self-righteous. A religious bent is nice but not necessary.
I'd of course then do the necessary background research to avoid offending anyone's canon.
Thanks,

Hrm. I think the Bajorans would fit that bill, but they're probably not their own race in this game. I think the Ferengi would probably be better, or the Cardassians. Or the Dominion too, they totally have a religious bent.

You could play 8472. They're even more one dimensional than the Borg! (We are the borg. Resistance to retcons are futile. You will be assimilated, and we'll leave your ship more or less alone.)

What the fuck is fluidic space anyway? Do they exist in the nostrils of the Great Green Arkleseizure?

It's... space. That's yellow. Duh.
Makes you wonder. If it's really a fluid in any signifigant density, why hasn't it condensed into huge masses from gravity? Given how visible it is, it's thick stuff. So does that make Voyager also submersable?

Star Trek nebulas are really, really thick. So are Space Empire IV nebulas. The best thing to do if you're a nomad race in the Pirates and Nomads mod is to put space yards in a nebula, and because you have only 1% maintainence you use Von Neumann bases to make an insane amount of ships. The beginning is rough though because if they find you you're fucked, but by the end you can get so, so many warships from your Von Neumann bases that you sell entire warfleets off to the highest bidder, replacing all their losses in a single turn.

We're playing with maximum fast start? Isn't that... a little too fast? 100K resources is a ton. Essentially unlimited money for most of the game. 5x research from the PBW Trait means our ships'll be obsolete within four, five turns basically, until late game...
Also. I uploaded my empire file. It's stock borg, but with a few non-gameplay related changes, such as my autominister preference if I can't make a turn, and my leader's name.

You won't have enough resource storage space to store 100k resources. <edit>It's basically a start that lets you research 1 or 2 theoretical areas in the beginning. The minerals, organics and rads will die after the first turn</edit>
I might decide to get rid of PBW Trait, not sure yet.
Hopefully, your ships won't be obsolete in 5 turns because you need resources to keep your ships advanced. If anything you'll be constantly retooling your ships, upgrading them, retrofitting them, eating the resources up. Many obsolete ships could possibly defeat more modern ships.
That's fine Nephtys, I use a custom autominister too.
I've decided to give it more time, wait until Monday. There's only 4 people in teh game so far, and more than 10 have expressed some interest or commented, so I'll wait until the weekend.

Yeah, I'm not sure about PBW either. On the one hand, my current AI game (not necessarily same settings as the one we're doing, I don't remember) is at turn 70 and I've only had any serious success expanding in the past ten turns or so. I haven't even had any real combat yet. On the other hand, I've been getting two and three tech levels in a single turn, so I've never really had the opportunity to create a fleet that wasn't completely outclassed by my new designs by the time they were done building. So right now everything's looking nice, with a good resource base, a fleet starting to accumulate, and some nice targets, but it took me 70 turns to get here.

Thanks for the tips guys! I'll wiki the listed when I get home from work and make my final choice, but I think the Dominion is going to be my first preference.

Don't worry too much about "research" or "canon", this is supposed to be fun not a project roftl. If you forget the difference between an Oberth or an Excelsior nobody's going to kill you. If you don't know what white is, or that Vulcans have Pon Farr every seven years, or Ferengi have rules of acquisition, don't worry. This is an alternate universe anyway so fun is here.
Although RP will be fun, funner if you know what you're talking about hehe. I'm hoping RP will be light-hearted but serious at times, but mostly funny. Maybe serious, if we really get into it, but there's always funny, can't lose with funny lol.
72 hour turns too, should give plenty of time between turns to write up short RP posts, or short fanfictions.

This is a universe in which exist cracks in the event horizons of black holes.
I'm not too surprised that they got a big ol' pocket dimension full of snot.

Oh, I get that, I just don't believe in half-measures. I also know if I were to be playing one of these set in the SW universe, I'd rather not run into ISDs called "omgwtfpwnu". I'm just exercising some courtesy.

Funny is good, looking forward to it. I've joined the game as "DrakeDefel" because I've changed ISPs since the last time I was on this website.

Arm your weapons and raise your shields. Game starts at 9:30 AM EST on Monday, October 31 (Halloween!). Remember the following,
- Make sure you're working with the stock 5000 point race.
- No changes to your empire except for things that have no effect on gameplay or game mechanics at all. AI Ministers are an exception. Things to change are leader's name, background, description, physical appearance, so on. No changes to things like planet type, definitely no changes to statistics, no changes to traits, so on.
- Make sure the PBW trait is selected (I've been told it's selected by default though). If it isn't, you'll research 5 times slower!
If you already made illegal changes or don't have the PBW trait selected, reload the stock 5000 point race and upload them again.
Still room for more, the more the merrier (and we've waited for you so join up!)
<edit>Note I've decided to make it a medium sized galaxy to make up for the fast research, and to make first contact fast.</edit>

If I want to update my empire file, I'll have to withdraw and rejoin, right?

Don't think so, when I hit join it doesn't ask me for an empire file only empire name and empire password.
If it doesn't let you upload again, ok withdraw, I'll be doing a final tally Sunday evening anyway.

Game is up.
Check your Empire first turn, make sure everything is okay. Also that you used the 5000 point version of your Empire as well.
Glhf, I'll be opening another thread for RP, game related issues/game mechanics/admin please go here.
Glhf, ka'plah.

Damn. I forgot to upload a new empire with a password and with Admiral James Tiberius Kirk as the leader instead of that other guy. Can I still do that before we get the first turn executed?

Okay we can redo it. Dalton Trogdor and I will have to redo our turns but it takes 5 minutes to do it anyway. (remember to use your 200k research points first turn).
Besides I was thinking of redoing it because... well, the galaxy is really too large. I thought I selected medium, but it looks like large. I also think I'm going to do 5 planets as a start. The game should be brutal and faster that way. I'm also adding a 1.0 year peace condition that starts 5.0 years after the game starts, so there's an allied victory.
The Stardate in PBW will be off, but that's it.
<edit>tux e-mail me your edited .emp file please</edit>
<edit 2>fuck it is medium! Large would have been way too large. I'm making a small galaxy, it'll be brutal and faster</edit 2>
<edit 3>I set the turns off automatic until I get tux's new Empire file.</edit>

I'm still waiting for tux to send me his empire file.
It'll be fast, as soon as he sends me the empire file I'll make a new game, upload it, and your old turn will be deleted and you can download the new turn, no hassle no fuss. As soon as it goes "turn required" in PBW, you're ready to download the new game.
Unless you're really against restarting.
