You can't just slap a dish on the side of a sufficiently large ship and call it a planet-destroying superlaser.
Unfortunately I don't have my ICS with me right now, so I can't back this up. But I'm very sure about being right.
Aside from the Eclipse super vessels, I don't think there are any SW ships that are equipped with superlasers that don't dominate their entire structure. Is there any mention of ISDs or even SSDs (or ships analogus in size) that simply have a superlaser stuck in them?
Didn't we see a few NR Imperator-analogues with axial superlasers in the NJO? IIRC, one was named the Mon Mothma.

There are ships with superlasers, but smaller ones.

This is perfectly in line with what was said in the movie, "The most powerful superlaser ever built" line. Obviously the DS superlaser was an oversized anomoly.

A real life example is artillery. We have howitzers and cannons, even huge ones, but the Nazis built that one gun Dora that was eight-hundred MM bore. Same thing.

The Empire has many superlasers, probably ways to carry them or fit them to smaller vessels too, but the DS superlaser was unique in the fact it was enormous and had power proportunate to its size.

Not that I recall. Perhaps axial super charge guns, but I don't even remember any of those. That aside, why would Republic warships be fitted with planet-destroying superweapons? Wouldn't that be a PR nightmare?

Mon Mothma had hidden gravity well generators, but no superlaser. I've never heard of that.

Hmm... that's weird. Isn't the first time I misremembered something like this, though. Sorry about that.

As to LaserRifle's original point, you CAN have superlasers mounted on ships without taking up most of the ship's internal space; LAATs devote much of their volume to troop transport, and the superlaser themselves house their gunners.

However, if you're only looking for planet-destroying superlasers, this example falls short.

In the beginning battle of RotS a venerator fires what seems like a beam weapon out of it's hangar effectively killing a seperatist capship in one shot..is this a superlaser?

I heard theories about it being a SPHA-T carried onboard firing its main turbolaser.

And it's 'Venator'.

Yep. Good old General Ani personally ordered Open Circle Fleet warships be retrofitted with SPHA-T cannon to up their firepower (ref. RotS ICS)

IIRC, I talked about putting a DS-scale superlaser on my imaginary wank ship. But it's worth noting that my wank ship is just the 2nd Death Star, made a tiny bit smaller, and stretched into a destroyer-shape. Neither it's size nor armament are really "wank" since they fit right in with what we've actually seen in the movies.

The other ships mentioned here are all much smaller than that, and don't qualify as wank either. None of these "smaller" ships mention having a full DS-scale superlaser, only (at most) the smaller Eclipse-style ones that won't actually explode a planet.

Is there something wrong with Super-Size warships?

I mean, really, if the Galactic Empire can build something 900km in diameter with a mass comparable to many moons, then why isn't it possible to build something 260km in length and with a mass much lower than the first Death Star.

Okay, maybe you aren't saying it's impossible, but just impractical. Well, on some levels, I agree. Something that large isn't going to be built in any great or small quantities. BUT, it might be good as a one-off Galactic Starfleet Command Ship. Or, like was suggested earlier, have it as the base of operations for a mission to another galaxy.

It could also be used in a 'Fleet in Being' way. Like the KMS Tirpitz was during WW2. It was big, bad, powerful, scary, and was kept out of the fight by Hitler because he didn't want to lose it. But the British were still terrified by the thing. In one instance, the Royal Navy learned that the Tirpitz was going to attack a convoy bound for Murmansk, and ordered the convoy's escorts away. The Tirpitz never left its Norwegian fjord. Instead, U-Boats picked the convoy apart at their lesure.

Overall, I'd say that having one Imperium class ship would be useful as a long-term military tool, and propaganda symbol. Any more than that would be wasteful.
