Linux, specifically Mandriva 2005 LE is what I use. I'll be updating to 2006 when I get back to school.
It's easy to install, comes with lots of software installed, easy access to a massive list of software via URPMI, and is low-maintence. No OS rot, no viruses, no spyware.
