Once you go back a thousand years or so you'll find that everyone in Europe is related to everyone else, thanks to the constant state of open war. My biology teacher used to joke that anyone with dark hair was a bastard Spaniard or Roman somewhere down the line - soldiers get frisky between battles.

I was told I'm connected to writer James Whitcomb Riley through my grandmother on my mother's side.

Acording to family history, I'm directly decended from people mentioned in The Spoon River Anthology. This would tend to be true as my mom's side of the family is from Lewiston, the town the book is based off of. Other than that the family tree either goes back to Virginia in the early 1700's, where it gets rather muddled, or back to Poland where we haven't been able to find it yet.

Yep, and I happen to be one of them.

That sums it up for people of significant historical note in my family tree.

I have Hatfield blood in my veins, so my folks tell me. Hatfield as in the Hatfields and McCoys. My great great (I think, maybe three greats?) grand mother was Essie Hatfield who married outside of the Clan into the Lawrence Family, which is my Grandmother's maiden name.

My father's grandmother's maiden name was Bach. We believe that it was the same Bach as the composer.

Incidentally, in a previous life, I was Alexander the Great's chief eunuch.

I'm probably related to the Dalton Gang.

One of my ancestors also possibly came over the Channel when the Normans invaded England in 1066.

Oh, yeah, that reminds me. Anyone familiar with the great 1965 blackout that shut down power to most the northeast US and southeast Canada? I am related to the guy who caused it. I think it was my mother's cousin or uncle or something like that. Technically he didn't cause it, but he was in charge of the Niagra power station the night it happened so he was held responsible for it.

According to my grandmother on my moms side, her side of the family came over on the Mayflower. I don't know how true that is, and I'm too cheap for gneaology.com, but it really wouldn't surprise me.

Huh. My distant great-grandfather from the Transylvania area of NC hunted with Daniel Boone. One of my 2nd cousins has one of the muskets that Daniel Boone gave to the grandfather.

Also, one of the line stayed in Detroit area after the Civil War. He married a nurse who helped heal him in a POW camp. He developed amnesia about his wife and kids in NC. He went on to start Fisher Carriage Works that progressed into Fisher Body Works.

I can only trace my family back to my great-grandfather, since genealogical records are hard to come by for overseas Chinese. In any case, I guess one bad thing about being Chinese is that the odds of having somebody historically significant in one's family must be astronomically small.
