Ok, I've been getting progress pics from my friend, but now its done and you all can see the whole process of how you would make a steampunk saber:

Image
First you gather your materials and blueprints.

Then, you work out the various "main" components, like
Image
The "power cells",

Image
The emitter,

Image
The pain-in-the-ass lantern that your "friend" insists on but ends up taking more time than anything,

Image
And the cool extra bits.

You work out roughly how it goes together:
Image

And your friend is happy, and stops bugging you for a few weeks. In that time, you start to work on the details, like
Image
A cool looking motor interface for the controls,

Image
An awesome looking porthole, with rivits that you didn't even ask for but flipped out over,

Image
Then you complete the emitter and start to make it look real.

Image
You darken the leather in the handle, and finish the "controls" using antique radio parts you ordered specially,

Image
Then you put in the masterpiece, which is a painted-quartz crystal that you cut by yourself with a diamond bit, on your first try, because you've decided that you ARE THAT MUCH OF A BADASS!

Image
And then you're done. You've built, unbuilt, and met and surpassed all your friend's needs/requests.

Seriously, this is the coolest thing ever, and I've only seen the pictures. He's still going to custom-build a case for it, and then I'll get it on Friday. If he were charging me the non-friend rate, it would cost me $250, as it took about 100 man-hours and its pretty damn awesome. But, its good to have a friend who loves to make things and needs only ideas.

P.S. This Saber was inspired by the planet "Ganath" from the Dark Empire II series, a planet with lightning guns and steam-powered starships.

I have to admit, that looks a lot better in real life than I honestly thought it would.

Fantastic job.

It is, without a doubt, the coolest Christmas present I've ever given to someone. Anybody want to marry into my family? Ladies? 8)

That is a work of awesome :D

I really dig the progress photos, gives a great insight to the process used to make it.

Ah, I bet you thought there'd be no more photos, but not so!

If you're going to make a steampunk lightsaber, you have to engrave the emitter guard:
Image

Then you make a badass case for it:
Image
Image

You can see the finished thing now, with all the details (except the emitter) on its stand:
Image

And in its case.
Image

I need some help, though. I've got about 10 hours from the time of this post to come up with a "name" for this lightsaber, which will be put on a plaque on the stand. The guy was gonna put "Steampunk Lightsaber" if I couldn't think of anything. Nerds, I need your help! Requirements:
1. Cool.
2. Not Japanese. We're not that kind of nerd.
3. Helpful suggestions only.

Thanks.

P.S.

The final work:

How about something in German? I don't know why, but German makes for really good sounding mechanical things... Try it!

Hm. German? Been awhile since I used it...

Donnermesser? (Thunder-cutter) Stillblitz? (Still-Lightning, which is admittedly an oxymoron but might how someone that's never seen a lightsabre before might describe it.)

At 4 AM, I suck at this.

Thing is, it doesn't really LOOK like either of those. Right now we're going with "Lumen Ex Consilium", which is "Light from within Wisdom".

My, that was quick! I had just decided the spambot was a spambot and punched the report button when it popped up the post was already in the HOS. Then I went back and refreshed my browser and found the thread spam-free!

But back to the sweet-ass steampunk lightsaber: I think it should be called the "Incandecent Dismemberator." 'Cuz steampunk is into technobabble-like names.

Yeah, seeing as the thread is bumped already, how about an update, Chewie? What name did you end up giving it? Maybe a new picture of you wielding it?
