I've not seen the movie yet but on the matter of Krennic, people who are overly cunning and manipulative have risk of starting to belive that they have absolute control over the flow of events, this cause Palpatine's fall in canon and Thrawn's fall in the legends. Krennic does seem like a man who could loose his composure if things didn't go the way he had planned, so I plan belive he would try to kill the rebels to cover up his own failure (or at least try to do so).

Why would I care about critics? Critics routinely like movies I hate.

While individual critics can be pretentious snobs or those with standards or views we may not necessarily agree with - and hence the importance of larger sampler sizes from differing perspective-leanings - it's like any other product so people's reviews should be factored in. I don't care about critics but if a bunch of them says this restaurant or hotel sucks ass then...
