Link.Manhattan's district attorney has obtained former president Donald Trump's tax returns after a years-long legal battle.
A spokesman for DA Cy Vance told NBC News Thursday morning that the long-fought subpoena for his records from Mazars USA was enforced Monday.
Vance's office was able to enforce the subpoena after the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear an emergency application from Trump's attorneys.
Vance sought the records as part of an expansive probe into Trump and his real-estate empire. The former president first sought to block the subpoena due to his office, and when that failed tried to block it for being excessive.
The nation's highest court rejected the former argument, and dispensed with the latter without a hearing.
Though the DA's office now has the records, grand jury secrecy rules mean it's possible the public will never see them.
But prosecutors are nonetheless expected to take a deep look at both the former president's finances and how they were prepared and presented, particularly with questions around property valuations, tax benefits and loan paperwork.

Most important: not just tax returns, but the accounting firm's records of "they told us this much, they told us that much", wherein the tax and insurance fraud lies.
Rule #1: Believe the autocrat. He means what he says.
Rule #2: Do not be taken in by small signs of normality.
Rule #3: Institutions will not save you.
Rule #4: Be outraged.
Rule #5: Don’t make compromises.

Along with any communications where Mazars told Trump that what he was asking them to file was illegal. Thus eliminating any "I didn't know" defense if he filed it anyway.
That Mazars complied so quickly after the Supreme Court decided makes me think that they handed over digital copies of everything. Which makes it easier for someone to copy and leak it, but also more likely that their access of the specific files will be logged allowing the leaker to be easily caught. Discouraging any leak attempts.
