No, we don't. My appologies if my last post was somewhat ambiguous, which I can see, given the lack of context, it may have been.

Let me make this perfectly clear.

No one can track fleet movements over vast distances.

Adrian, please rewrite your post to reflect the fact that your people would not know that the Silver Flame was under attack. Knowledge of the attack is not what I approved.

What I approved was that you could discover the goings on in that system by means of a merchant or diplomat travelling into the system and finding a blockade of Crobuzon ships there. Something which I had the impression would take place over a couple of posts before you'd start sending in ships of your own.

The reason why I approved this is because we need more interaction. However, what explicitly CAN'T happen is people detecting fleet movements over stellar distances.
Err, vast as in outside your territorial boundaries, right?

I'd be rather dissapointed if having massive FTL sensors arrays on each of my major worlds (part of my massive defense points expenditure, in the same manner that Nitram spends points on his stargate network) didn't grant me near-omniscience on whatever goes on in my realm.

That's certainly not what he means, internal tracking systems of varying degrees of efficacy are old hat in STGODs. For that matter, so are listening posts allowing you to extend that capacity outside your borders- you just need to go build them, with all the attendant risks.

I'll have you know that I am a nice man, with happy feelings, all of the time!

This has been a test of the Emergency Newb Classification System. If this was an actual Newb Emergency, far more fleet assets would have been deployed, and they wouldn't have been nearly as polite. Have a Nice Day. :D

 I don't know why, but I find the whole situation funny. Particularly Spyder's Big Lettered outburst.

Yes sir! Right away sir!

I have something in mind that should work beautifully. Beowulf may have to edit his post a bit, but I'll try to keep that to a minumum. Project Argus goes back to only being capable of detecting FTL signals emmited by enitire civilizations, and isn't useful for detecting fleet movements. I guess it is now my (shitty, 'cause I didn't spend any actual points) early warning system.

EDIT -
Damn it! I like that pargaraph so much! Screw this, I'm preserving it.
The Iron Fleet is probably one of the most, if the not the most, powerful fleets in the known Galaxy. Because of this, it expends enormous amounts of energy to even move. Even if the Republic had been looking elsewhere, they would have noticed, but Project Argus wasn't looking elsewhere. Large portions of the gigantic sensors arrays were focused on on X-2, known to the locals as Crobuzon. When the Iron Fleet collectively activated their teardrives and moved into Silver Flame space, the Republic noticed, and all hell broke loose in the top echelons of command.
Doesn't it look nice in it's jar of blue preserving fluid?

Yes...because all civilizations will be using the same type of FTL communication, or will be using interceptible variations on FTL communication at all...

*Refers Matt Huang to Adrian's first post in Dip thread*

EDIT - Argus are essentially a bunch of Listening Post [0].

by Thirdfain
A bunch of listening posts near me? OR in your own space? To be effective and track the movements of the Iron Fleet, they'd need to be near or in my own territory. In other words, you'd actually have to take a risk in-game to gain an advantage such as tracking of my internal fleet movement. Capisce?

They are in my own space, and used as an early warning system. Long ranged detection of the Iron Fleet's movement has been retconned out of existence. With the exeption of a paragraph copied to this thread. I liked the way it was written.

I've updated my previous post. Suggest that everyone go read it.

Ball's in you court, Thirdfain.

BTW - Do you like the name I gave the Ghosthead?

Edit - Fuck! I totally forgot about Beowulf. I'm not done editing yet.

Edit 2 - Okay, now my post has been updated properly. I don't think Beowulf will have to update his reply at all.

I'm waiting for Spyder to tell me what my assault teams have come across, I'll handle your vessel showing up in the region in the same response. The Arisians are a fine name, however, I would like to take a second to clarify the connections between Ghosthead technology (if it can be callled that).

An analogy: Imagine if human society as we know it collapses, and falls back to the dark ages. A millenium from now, primitive tribes build canoes, and paddle around the Suez Canal in them.

You could say that is more or less what Crobuzon is doing: They are no more using Ghosthead technology than our fictional primitives are using British technology. They are merely taking advantage of the effects of previous high technology.

I understand that. By "same technology base" the Mekidar mean, "these guys fuck around with the fabric of reality like the Arisians did." Because of the massive clusterfuck that the Great Wars were, the Mekidar don't even know of what they were capable of in the past. For example, the ancient Mekidar would probably have had reality stabilizing tech that would would render an entire system inhospitable to Crobuzon technology. The Arisians would reguard it as mere ECM, annoying, but nowhere near crippling.

Hmm... thinking up the responses a completely alien being would give is much harder than I thought it would be.
I should have made my race a bunch of star trek cliche lump-heads

See, that's why you have technology which extends into self-contained pocket dimensions. You can stabilize or rewrite whatever you want locally, it still won't make a difference.

Man I'm glad the discussion thread is OOC.

I was hoping to get-in a reply before leaving to Atlanta. Unfortunately Thirdfain hasn't posted yet, and unless he does within the next couple of hours, (even then there is no guarantee I'll have time to do it today) my reply shall have to wait until Saturday.

That's ok, I could do with more time to work on the Benefactors. They've been a little neglected through the Silver Flame shennanigans.

You could always stumble upon my nice little stealthy recon ship off your border :P
At least spying does something. If it may only be war *g*

For god's sake, I'm a mercantile power. Can SOMEONE send a trader? A diplomat? Am I to be nothing but the subject of military inquiries and intelligence operations? I have quadrillions of Grand Power shekels to spend on raw materials and finished goods.

It sucks that Nephtys quit, I opened relations with her, never got anywhere... I need to get the diplomatic ball rolling.

You know, opening economic relaitonships gives you leverage. Right now, the VERY powerful corporate concerns in the Crobuzoner gov't have no assets " overseas." Once that situation changes, then Crobuzon will have far more reason to step carefully in the political stage. Being a profitable source of trade gives you power in the Legislature and Parliament.,

It should be noted that people should be trying to establish relations with at least one of the grand powers.

While grand powers will not ally, they may however agree not to get in each other's way should they decide to stomp the same target.

Some of you may need Crobuzon's protection in the coming months.

Ok. :D

Following Thirdfain's lead.

The Conrad Cruiser:

Type: Conrad
Value: 10
Faction: Concord Navy

Often seen on long range patrol, the Conrad's thick hull and ample storage space makes it ideally suited for long range combat missions, exploration and the impromtu dinner party.

Notable Conrad vessels:

The Ganymede

The Artemis

Hey Dahak, I have a quick question for you.

Do you mind if my in system naval forces locates your destroyer, the one outside of my system. and makes contact with it?
