He probably read the email sent by one of our ex-members to Darkstar saying that there are some people here who would have no problems with killing him. He got his ass burned off pretty quick-like.

He's already posted this as evidence that we're a bunch of trolls. I am convinced the man/kid has no life, or has a very thin skin. Poor sod should be grateful he never grew up in my home region. Our teachers and community leaders had no qualms about calling a student an idiot in the event they acted as such. Its a good policy, one that I hope Phoenix grows a bit more backbone, or college/the working world are going to crush him like a bug.

 is right. Phoenix really think telling him that his behavior would result in someone taking him to court in real life constitutes a "threat", eh? What a pussy.

You actually think that retard could even get IN to college? And not drop out of high school?

I would like to think that there's hope for everyone. Perhaps, once he matures, he could make a valuable member of society. One never knows. *shrugs*

Phoenix obviously has some kind of learning disability, SOME form of severe mental retardation. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it turns out he has Down Syndrome or some other severe mental disorder or injury.

But again, if Spock wants to do the scaling to prove his point, ,he can be my guest. (then again it would still be an upper limit, since the comet was closer to the camera than the enterrpise at the only scaling reference I noticed.)
As far as scaling goes, I got bored in one of my less interesting classes and did some scaling on the standard "flying through space" imagery used a couple times.

Image

The comet is somewhat difficult to accurately box, given the vapor cloud, but in that image, it appears to be a spheroid approximately 100 pixels in diameter, +/- 3 pixels. The Enterprise-D is at a bit of an angle, giving the distance across the widest part of the saucer section at 140 pixels by 18 pixels.

Pythagorean theorem
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
140^2 + 18^2 = c^2
19600 + 324 = c^2
19924 = c^2
141.15 = c

So the Enterprise-D's saucer section is approximately 141 pixels wide, +/- 2 pixels for anti-aliasing. According to Memory Alpha (link), the beam of the GCS is 463.73 meters.

d(C) = diameter of comet.

d(C)/100 = 463.73/141
141 * d(C) = 463.73 * 100
d(C) = 46373/141
d(C) = 328.88m (+/- 13m)

328 +/- 13m = d(C)
v(C) = 4/3*pi*r^3
v(C) = 4/3*pi*(d(C)/2)^3
v(C) = 4/3*pi*164^3

v(Comet) = 18.4 * 10^6 m^3

The comet has a diameter of 328 meters and a volume of 18.4 * 10^6 m^3, as an absolute lower limit. Since it is obviously behind the E-D, it is most likely quite a bit larger, but in order for his figures to be accurate, it would have to be far enough away that it is an order of magnitude, and then some, smaller in apparent size.

Image

Doesn't look that far away to me, but I don't know the math well enough to do the distance scaling to arrive at a better figure.

I like how in Pheonix's latest round of incoherent babble, he says that Mike Wong's line of thinking isn't far off from Boyd's commentary about baby-killing.

Libel is a crime, Pheonix. And I know you're reading this.

I'm not the greatest scaler in the world but here is what I came up with:

Cheesy scaling

I can't see that comet being any bigger than 7 km tops.

No way, dude, the comet is very clearly much closer to the camera than the E-D. Put another way, if the comet is 6km (the purple circle) it's far enough away in the first shot I put up that it's ten times smaller, which just isn't justifiable by the evidence. I think I'm going to study Saxton's scaling a bit, see if I can't crack it.

Well,
  1. As I said, I'm not great at scaling.
  2. It was a quick, first attempt.
  3. For a second attempt, I'd probably adjust the multiplier by the change in width of the phaser beam

I think the key is to scale the two shots against each other.

IE, in shot 1, the E-D saucer is 141 px wide, in shot 2, it's 123, therefore, the camera in shot 2 (which is very obviously placed on the comet itself) is no further than 15% (141/123 = 1.15) further than the camera in shot 1. From the relative sizes of the comet in both (as shown by the purple circle in yours, and the green lines in mine) one could probably figure out the approximate distance from the E-D in both shots, and thereby establish the diameter of the asteroid.

From the very simplistic scale drawing you did, it's certainly between 328m lower limit and 6km upper limit.

Damn, no edit: I mean really, how retarded does on need to be to try and take a point that is obviously about targeting accuracy, hitting one-meter tall droids and think its about weapon power?

How do you count the pixels? Is there a program you can download for that?

Any decent image editor tracks the size in pixels of selected areas or user-drawn lines.

In MSPaint (*shudder*) you just need to select an area and look in the bottom-right corner:

Do what I did in this screenshot:

Image

Make a box around the line such that one corner is on each end of the diagonal line, measure the width and height, then use Pythagoras's theorem.

Microsoft Paint will give you 2 figures when you use the line tool along the lines of say, 10 x 10. Those numbers represent pixels. Whatever those figures are, just use them as the sides of a right angle triangle and use the Pythagorean theorem to work out the diagonal. In the above case, 14.1
