Both. People pick, though I reserve the right to stick them somewhere if they want to be too far away or what have you.

Heh... my warships are likely to have names such as "Scourge of the Heretic", "Xeno Bane" etc. or something holy and grand like "Excelsis Deo".

Because they're warships. It's silly to sugarcoat their purpose; far better to give them a name that suggests these are things that might kick your teeth in and burn your planet to cinders if you misbehave.
Bloodhound is not a mean name, it implies that your ship is likely to be good at smelling stuff, is generally a gentle pleasant companion and is lible to get drool everywere.

Alternatively, that it will chase you relentlessly ahead of a large group of heavily armed hunters for the crime of you being a certain species

Pfft, nothing wrong with sorting out alliances now. It's space - being next door or separated by hundreds of parsecs just means we can't send a minor royal over for tea on a whim. Well okay with the wormholes we can, but whatever

Well, okay, so it's not
that sinister, but kidnapping your citizens to sell for (rumored) genetic experimentation counts for
something, doesn't it?

Man, I find these games really interesting, but it feels as overwheliming as walking into the New Yor Stock Exchange floor at peak hours

... And as you might've noticed the
Bloodhound-class is the only class of ships that sacrifices armament for sensors etc.

Or you could rip off the one I've created... (see my sig)
Anyway, PeZook, I would like to see what kind of spreadsheet wizardry you've cooked up. (I'll PM you.)

It seems like I stumbled over this far too late...
Is there still time to join, or too late? And if so, is there a "rule thread" for the new initiate? 30 pages of thread is a bitch to read in one go

Rules are on page 27, and we start in about a month. So you do have time to join.

Well, after lurking for a long time, I've decided to become active again and give SDNW a shot. I'm glad to see that it still isn't too late to join and that it won't start until next month, which is perfect timing for me.
EDIT: Am I correct in assuming that I need to wait for Steve to assign a dice roll number before I start?

If you want to play, post in participant roll call.

Ruleset.
The game's not due to start for over a month, we're looking to a July start, this gives everyone time to put together common histories, collaborate for game-start stuff, etc.

Getting BDZed?
Not that
I'd ever do such a thing...

Ah, but it's totally deniable. See, it's not Collectors kidnapping Chamarrans. It's some utterly despicable thugs and criminals doing that.
The fact we don't do anything to dement the rumors notwithstanding...

I am tempted to join, after my shy attempt on SDW1.
Since my attempts at making an original faction quickly devolve into Emoish Grimdarkerism, I'm thinking of playing a fanfic-ized version of The Boyz.
What has been decided on Hyperspatial topology and the whole thing about "slow" areas with independent corridors? Can't be properly raidery without some badlands to inhabit.

High friction areas, or shoals to those with an insistence on nautical terminology, are the bad lands you seek. They're known for much slower hyperdrive speeds, though there's patches and such that allow better (though still bad) speed which pirates and such will have bothered to map out. They're also known for impairing subspace sensors, So yeah its the perfect place to be a skulking dastard.
Hyperspace corridors are low friction and allow very good speeds, some are artificial some are natural and they're a great definer of trade routes and strategic movement as its a royal pain to have to crawl through hyperspace outside a corridor for long distance travel.

Is there a mechanism for economic growth? Or a rule-of-thumb?

I think it's meant to be RP'ed if anything Thanas. I know I've scribbled down some numbers for pop / GDP growth as a basis, but a lot will depend on what happens in-game obviously.

I guess if you start building the SuperBancruptcy-Dreadnought for 250% GDP in one round, you're doing something wrong
