Could you imagine the losses that alone would cause to Sony? ^^;; Somehow, I don't think we'll be seeing anything of the sort, anytime soon.

I don't understand how the different HD resolutions work, so is there a possible hardware reason the PS3 can't upscale? Or is it just laziness? I mean, maybe HD output modules are limited or something? I would have thought it'd be like a computer, and you'd be able to wiggle around the res as much as you like up to display limits.

Maybe it's the infamous 'menu too small for screen' thing they're worried about? Some games don't scale their 2d out-of-game stuff like menus, so the main menu has a huge black border around it in high resolutions.

Stark, Firmware
Apparently, it is a firmware problem, though it should be able to be download though sony.
Question is, when?

Also, how are some sony games going to fit on the 360 (50 GB games next year!!!!)

By cutting the bloat and actually using some fucking compression.

Best Buy finally got a PS3 demo station.

Most disappointing. Only had MotorStorm and an NBA game. MotorStorm was thoroughly disappointing compared to the ridiculously absurd E3 trailer that no one believed anyway. I saw bad textures and sharp lines at various points, and it didn't look very good at all compared to some 360 titles I've played...

You don't understand. The PS3 creates the image, it's not like a DVD where it's just showing existing stuff. Why can't it create the image at whatever res it wants like a computer?

Never mind of what I said above. They should have no problems because because PS2 did that to the PS1 games and many dvd players out there can upscale. like this one.
So they are just lazy or rushed. Your's to pick. :)
However, it still can be acheive through downloading firmware, that is if sony offers it....

I'm ticked off over the whole PS3 situation.

I started at 9:30 PM Wednesday night (when I got off work), and had a five hour sleep break in between.

By afternoon today I had gone to every single retail store in a thirty mile radius. Everything. Best Buy, Circuit City, ShopKo, Target, Wal-Mart, etc, etc.

ShopKo irritated the heck out of me. I got there at opening and spoke with a manager. He told me that their official policy was any campers before closing would be sent away, but then said if I wanted I could start a line when it got dark. Meanwhile, I knew one Wal-Mart was not allowing lines (they threatened to call the police on the people in line) and would hold a lottery at 10 AM, so I rushed back for it. I made the lottery but didn't win, then I rushed back to shopko- on the way, I drove through a fast food joint and got some tacos and ate while I drove.

Two guys from the Wal-Mart just beat me and somehow convinced the manager to let them camp. ShopKo only got two systems.

I was polite, but I really wanted to smack the manager right then and there, because I was there before any of these idiots and he sent me away.

Anyway, I was out all day and went EVERYWHERE. Most stores had twice as many campers as they had systems

How do you know that? If it's so easy to fix, why don't they fix it NOW? Either it's fixable or it isn't: either way Sony is being fucking stupid. It's like they're trying to be dumber than everyone thinks! :)

Gamespot has a live feed video of the PS3 launch party in NYC. The consensus is that it's hilarious.

One guy seems to have been on camera at least three times, as if he's purposely seeking them out.

Another said he was going to sell his on eBay and buy an XBox 360 and Gears of War.

EDIT: As time passes, it appears that most if not virtually everybody Gamespot talked to plans to sell their PS3s on eBay.

EDIT2: Forgot this one: some guy tried to sell grass to the Gamespot crew while on camera!!

You know, the Ebay market is probably going to drop like a rock soon. The first few people might get a good return, but if a full 30% of the people are selling their PS3's direct to Ebay....

This is just what I predicted would happen. Anticipating a repeat of the 360 scenario, everyone and their dog buys a PS3 thinking to sell it on eBay for massive profit, only to find that not enough people want to pay $500-600 for a game console, and end up stuck with an expensive console they didn't want.

And this from the company that has spent the past two years whoring GENUINE 1080i/p!

Fucking losers.

There have been reports coming in about ensuing chaos in some places.

One 24-hour Wal*Mart shut down because a riot almost broke out outside.

A 50-year-old man and a kid got trampled at a Best Buy when one line charged at a sprint into another tightly formed at the door, crashing people into the brick wall behind them.

A guy dislocated his jaw crashing into a metal pole at a Wal*Mart that pulled another "sprint to the door and the first people to get in line get a PS3" act (this seems to have been happening all over).

A GameStop was robbed by two men at gunpoint who made off with four PS3s and four XBox 360s.

Good lord! I can't recall any of this shit going on during the X360 launch. I could be wrong, it's been a while.

I don't recall such, either, though that was probably because most people were buying the 360 so they could play it rather than auction it on eBay.

There was a drive-by BB shooting at a Lexington, KY Best Buy, where four people were hit, including a local TV news reporter.

Also, this bizarre incident reported by Kotaku...

I'm just glad that the Wii didn't launch today along with the PS3. Even if everything went without event, it would have been just a total pain in the ass to deal with another set of preorders and line-camping buyers.

And this is why we at the Sanford FL SuperTarget are smarter than most retail employees. We told the campers, two days in advance, that we were only going to have eight PS3s.

Lo and behold, at seven this morning when I went home from work, there were only eight people outside the door.

In other news, a PS3 just sold on eBay for $30,100 dollars. That's a profit of $29,500 for whoever did it.

This entire thing just reminds me of the novel "Jennifer Government", with Nike organising to have a shooting at the launch of a new pair of their shoes just to get the publicity.

Though in this case it seems to be an even mix of Sony, retailers and desperate gamer morons who are responsible for the issues.

I wonder if it's just a scammer on the account that the person who won it has zero feedback. Of course, it could just be a geniune new user who wants it but given the scams that's been going on, I wouldn't be surprise if they're in this.

I knew there was a reason I normally wait until well after a console has been out on the market for awhile before buying one.

Seriously, I was wrong when I said I couldn't think of any way Sony could further fuck up their launch. Total chaos was the obvious next level.

And I have that to answer the 360 question.

This.

And this.

A man in Connecticut was actually shot by robbers while waiting in line:
Man Shot While Waiting in Line for PlayStation 3
PUTNAM, Conn. (AP) November 17,2006
Connecticut State police say two armed suspects tried to rob a line of people waiting to buy the new Playstation 3 gaming console in Putnam and shot one who refused to give up the money.

State police say the two confronted a "bunch of people who were in line" outside a Wal-Mart store shortly after three this morning and demanded money.

One of the patrons resisted and was shot.

Vance says two gunmen fled, and the victim was taken to University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. There's no immediate word on the victim's condition.

Vance says police were searching for the suspects.

Short supplies of the PS3 and strong demand led to lines of buyers, some waiting for days, outside stores across the country.

I sincerely hope this is a scammer, and that none of the people who bought PS3s with the intent to eBay are able to resell them for a profit. All these instances of drive-bys, smash-and-grabs, and people being trampled are most likely caused by losers looking to make a quick buck on the secondary market.

We're already seeing that in Japan: PS3s being sold on eBay are starting to go for less than retail value. The bottom has totally fallen out of the market.
