The two are the same. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Also note that the elves in TLotR don't really understand the word "magic." They have no concept that they are using it, just as we have no concept that we are using advanced technology whenever we strap on a watch or put on a shirt. To a caveman, nylon would seem magical, as would electricity, plastic, and metal tools.
