Holy shit. I don't have a link for this, but I just saw it on the news. Apparently, police tapes reported that the first officers on the scene actually saw the killer eating parts of his victim. No link for this, and frankly it's my hope that it's not true. UGH.

The Vancouver Sun had his picture in the paper as well. It should be on line here. He could have been mistaken for Native by passengers not paying attention. He was white but being a Carnie he was probably out all day in the sun and about as tanned as he was going to get.

Mike, most criminals don't eat their victims. Even most murderers don't eat their victims. Granted, he didn't make a three-course meal of it with fava beans and nice chianti, but eating any of the victim at all stands out. You have to admit that is unusual.

To me, it's starting to look like a Rabid Dog case - whether he's insane or not, he's too dangerous to be set free. We can't have people loose in society who saw off heads and eat their fellow human beings. It's just not safe for the rest of us.

Naturally. I don't deny that he's nuts. But there are different kinds of "insane", and unfortunately, the insanity defense seems to work for all of them. It should only work for the specific case in which the person honestly thought he was not killing someone, not the case in which he just goes nuts and decides that he doesn't give a shit about social rules any more because life sucks and pain is good.

Luckily, Canada has a "dangerous offender" classification in which someone can be imprisoned indefinitely, as long as the Crown feels that he is a threat to public safety. So even if he is given a relatively unimpressive sentence due to lawyers' tricks, it might end up effectively being life imprisonment, as long as he is classified as a "dangerous offender". And if he isn't, then I would have to question the mental competence of the judiciary.

There was a copy-cat attack on a Greek island

Police on the Greek island of Santorini have shot and injured a knifeman who decapitated his girlfriend and walked around the streets with her head.

Terrified residents of the popular tourist island barricaded themselves into their homes and called the police.

The suspect, 35, was shot during a dramatic car chase in which he crashed into a motorbike and badly injured the rider and pillion passenger.

The crime is one of the most gruesome in Greece in recent memory.

The man reportedly beheaded his girlfriend, a teacher in her mid-to-late 20s, in the village of Vourvoulos, close to the island's capital, Thira, and then paraded with the head.

Speaking on Greek television, the local sub-prefect said the man attacked officers who tried to arrest him and slashed one policeman in the face.

The man threw the head into a patrol car and then stole a police jeep and tried to get away.

But after 400m the suspect slammed into a motorbike carrying two female doctors.

They were thrown into the air and badly hurt.

The police then opened fire and hit the alleged knifeman five times.

According to one eyewitness, one police bullet ricocheted off the road and hit a woman in the leg and jaw.

The suspect is said to have a history of jealousy and domestic violence.

The authorities say they are organising a military aircraft to fly the man and some of those he injured to undergo emergency surgery in Athens.

While sleeping with his earphones on, McLean was suddenly attacked by the man sitting next to him on the bus, later identified as 40 year old Vince Weiguang Li.

Why does it matter if he was a "Juggalo" (whatever in the hell that is), a Jain, a Orthodox Jew or stoned furry? Unless there is supposed to be some sort of nefarious implication as to his involvement with that "organization," who cares what subculture or group he belonged to beyond the fact that it may have led to his being targeted by the nut who butchered him? Even if he has some tenuous connection to gang culture, he certainly didn't deserve to be brutally attacked merely because he had an affinity or association for some group of jackass makeup-wearers.

And even if any of that is somehow relevant, did the attacker know this beforehand? Is this why the dead kid was attacked? If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if he was targeted and attacked because he was alone, asleep (vulnerable to a surprise assault) and smaller than the guy who knifed him to death. Perhaps he was nothing more than an easy target of opportunity.

No no no... I do not consider this to be so. I only brought it up because the poster above mentioned "Juggalo." And this Juggalo nonsense is apparently affiliated in some way with elements of gang culture, going by the Wiki article linked above:

So, there is the "tenuous" connection to gang culture I spoke of. Now, even if this Wiki information is true, it is still irrelevant, which was my point. Besides, nothing in the news reports have said the victim was a member of a gang. It's possible there was a perceived association with this Juggalo garbage on the part of the attacker that set him off in some way. But I seriously doubt the attacker was aware of the kid's interest in this subculture, especially because the victim was not wearing the clown makeup at the time of the murder.

Unless proven otherwise, I will not be surprised if the victim was chosen because he was asleep, alone and smaller than the attacker.

A local paper in Manitoba, Canada -- where a Greyhound bus passenger was recently killed, beheaded and eaten -- has decided not to run an advertisement from PETA that equates that murder to the slaughter of animals.

PETA wrote on their blog, "While it isn't every day that a human is violently attacked and eaten by another human, it's worth noting that it is the norm for many people not to give any thought to the fact that restaurants are serving flesh that comes from innocents who were minding their own business before someone came after them with a knife."

The Phelps will be denied entry into Canada

Canadian border guards have been told to bar a fanatic church group that was planning to protest the funeral of a man beheaded on a Greyhound bus, reports say.

NDP MP Pat Martin told the Winnipeg Free Press that Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day sent the alert to border guards Thursday.

The church group, described in a British documentary as "the most hated family in America," told CTV.ca earlier Thursday that it planned to protest at the funeral of 22-year-old Tim Mclean on Saturday.

Martin said his office was flooded with phone calls Thursday with Winnipeg constituents angered by the group's plan.

"These people are almost as crazy as the murderer," he told the newspaper, referring to the church's intentions.

The daughter of the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, based in Topeka, Ka., told CTV.ca she and several other church members will go to Winnipeg on Saturday to demonstrate against what she described as McLean's "filthy way of life." Shirley Phelps-Roper said his life was emblematic of Canada's moral decay.

"God handed us a gift," Phelps-Roper said in a phone interview on Thursday.

She said McLean deserved his death by beheading on a Greyhound Bus last week.

"(His death was) supremely unemotional. You got God shaking in rage. There is no emotional component ... He was a rebel against God. He was taught to be a rebel by his parents. He came from a rebel country ... They brought this wrath upon his head. And it sucks to be him and it sucks to be them," Phelps-Roper said.

She said his brutal murder was a sign from God.

"You gotta connect the dots, people ... from your idols to your filthy way of life," she said.

"Here's what I know. He is dead and God does not do that to people that serve in his truth."

Phelps-Roper described McLean -- who she had never met -- in an insulting, insensitive and graphic manner. Her crudest descriptions of the 22-year-old are not printed.

"I haven't met him personally, but he has nothing going on," she said dismissively.

"(His life) was all about him. Blah, blah, blah ... He was a rebel ... I don't need to know anything else ... I don't need to know the minutia. Everything you need to know is right there."

The Westboro Baptist church has gained notoriety in recent years for setting up protest pickets at the funerals of U.S. soldiers who died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Church members claim the deaths are part of God's wrath against Americans for turning their back on his teachings. They have repeatedly called the U.S. a "fag" nation, a phrase Phelps-Roper used repeatedly to describe Canada.

Phelps-Roper said she does not mind that her family is reviled by the majority of Americans. She claimed she rejoices when people say they despise and hate her family.

"I say, 'cha ching.' That goes in our bank. God gives us tokens of his love," she said.

Phelps-Roper said members of the Westboro Baptist Church, which numbers about "70 souls," is comprised mainly of a single extended family.

The group was supposed to protest a play held in a downtown Toronto bar that mocked their church's reviled views. "The Pastor Phelps Project" played at The Cameron House Thursday without incident, according to reports.

McLean was killed on July 30 after being stabbed repeatedly on a Greyhound bus by a complete stranger. He was then beheaded.

Vince Li, 40, has been charged with second-degree murder. A psychiatric evaluation has been ordered for Li.
