OK, someone need's to explain this to me.

All I see is a some statues of scantily glad anime chicks, why is this such a big deal?
Because they are FOURTEEN year old scantily clad anime 'chicks' , its kiddie porn in all but name...............
How can you tell their age? All these anime chicks look alike.
Can a cartoon character even have an age?

Not to terribly surprising, remember Gainax even went so far as to produce a 30min Eva porno,
Do you have prove Gainax produced it?

While I respect Spanky's position on the subject, I personally have no problem with such things and I have to disagree with the notion that it is a depiction of a 14 year old.

Due to it being a subjective medium you can easily pass it off as an 18 year old version of the character, I would think thats why they are not considered illegal in the first place.

That, and the fact that in Japan, 14 is legal.

No, it's not that shocking. After all, only a little less than 400 years ago(possibly even less than that), it was considered normal for a 14-year-old girl to marry in Europe and the American Colonies Heck, it was probably similar in other parts of the world at one time or another(By some accounts, even Mary was 14 when she married Joseph).

But time marches on, and sensibilities change. And they change in different ways in different places. Something that was acceptible then isn't now, and vice versa. The 14-year-old girl who was encouraged to marry in 1697 would probably be put in the stocks if she went out wearing even some of the more conservative stuff that 14-year-old girls wore in 1997.

VF5SS wrote:Oh no no no! If you remember my talk with Spanky over the name when he said, "Japanimation is racist!" Well so is Japan! Jap...Japan! In order to translate is correctly it must be refered to by a name that is more apt than just "animation". Instead we should use a variation of "japanimation" and call it "Land of the Rising Sun-imation!" Now that's a name you can be proud of! 8)
Considering how obviously bad spanky is at displaying his premises, no matter how clear his conclusion is, I really don't care about some of the things he claimed or how he argued them.

You want semantics? Oh, I'll give you semantics. :P
The point isn't what we kind of crazy names/translations we can come up with. It's predominatly called either anime or 'Japanese animation' because those are the the clearest names for it. We use either the name they use for it, or the clearest description of it compared to what we call ours (ie, anime means 'animation' in Japanese, or we refer to it being 'animation that is Japanese').

"Japanimation" (or the more obscure and moronic "Japanime"), on the other hand, has one a single origin: the sole purpose of being an ignorant, insulting pun. Serriously, it's a goddamn pun used almost exclusively by people who either dislike Japanese animation or don't understand it in any reasonable way (and everyone else probably just heard it from them and somehow got used to it). It's comparable to referring to French cinema (clearly, 'cinema from France'); what kind of dipshit calls it "FrenchiVision"? An ignorant, insulting dipshit, that's what, who's only making a dumb pun to express his distaste of films from France, or just act like an idiot.

Going from that perspective, I could see where Spanky insisted that it's considered 'racist'; Because of it's origin/intent, it conveys an additional meaning of ignorance/hate to about 80% of anime fans, much in the same way a supposedly innocent use of 'negroes' or 'yellows' might be taken by people who know what the terms really imply. If you're going to be communicating with people; please try to understand what messages you're conveying.

You sick fuck.....in the show they are explicitly said to be 'children' ie..13 to 14 years old , and they do not get older, therefore the statue is of a 14 year old wrapped in bandages and shoving her ass in your face.....wether its real life or a cartoon , depictions of child sex are equaly evil!! There is no mincing hairs on this issue!! Now dont get me wrong , adult porno is good , I'm with Lord Wong on this whole issue of adult entertainment, but to use children or child images crosses a boundary that I feel is wrong.

Also the argument that centures past it was common to marry at 14 blah blah blah....is bullshit, its not 1066, 1775 or 33BC, its 200fucking3, where current ethics and morality say its WRONG to have sexual thoughts about 14 yearolds!! We also don't live to be only 45 on average and live our lives in squalor.......

Have an issue with the Internet-Troglodyte 'Extreme Anime' side all you want, but siding with the polar opposite extremist side doesn't accomplish anything. Look at me: I express my distase for Fansub Elitists and Internet Troglodytes all-round, but I sure as hell don't use a term that will piss off almost everyone in-between.

Besides, 'Japanimation' does not have any sort of ring to it besides the ones I mentioned (just as I bet 'Frenchivision' sounds perfectly clever to dipshits out there), except to urusai baka na gaijin. :D

Aw, look, they know Japanese, isn't that so elite? OMG, seriously dudes, before you said that I thought you were just lame poseurs, but now I know you're hardcore elite.

And I would never call japanese animation 'cartoons'. That might imply they were actually funny. :P

Alot of people know japanese, you dipshit. I didn't fucking take it for 4 1/5 years to be considered an elitist who just picks up a few phrases from subtitles.

You, on the other hand, have revealed yourself once again to be an ignorant, blow-hard asshole on the subject. Go ahead and make stupid remarks about the medium if you want, I don't care.

Interjecting Japanese into English conversation for the hell of it has never been funny to me and I love making fun of people who do.

Someone takes their precious medium a little personally.

Then that's your problem, not mine. I'll talk to whomever in whatever language we can communicate in. I don't like when people speak spanish, but I don't go around acting like a fucking prick about it.

And someone likes to butt-into threads with totally useless flamebait. I'm just responding justfully.

So lemme get thsi straight, your arguing abou thenameof Japanese animation? Doesn't that seem the least bit trivial? Arguing about whether or not the term "Japanimation" isrudeorrascist? Anyways, how do you know that a person in the buisness (for example) would be offended by such a term? Hardly seems worth arguing about... :?

All I'm saying is that VF5SS needs to realize that, like any other term invented to be insulting/offensive, many people take it that the speaker is using the same original. In the past he's always skirted around the issue, insisting that he likes the term and doesn't mean it that way makes all the difference, and takes his point way too deep into semantic arguments. It's not that different from the intent of racist/archaic terms that people still use, even if in a harmless manner. I just want him to know it's like that to alot of fans (yes, even casual fans, dammit).

Exactly. Through the amazing powers of my super duper sarcasm ray :p , I have been able to bring to light the utter trivial nature of this very arguement and thus prompting everyone involved to chuckle as they take a step back and say, "Dude..." :D

Well, I never thought of it as a derogatory term. I've seen it a few times before at my friends place, his bro is constanley got anime movies lying around and some of them have "Japanamation" in the title. Anywho, point taken, I'll take your word for it.

Some of the really old stuff or the "Japanimation action pack! 4 old, cheap-distribution rights foreign cartoons on one VHS!" crap made by garage companies call it that, though that's not too surprising.

Heh. One of my friends is in a an English class that is reading a book on the Holocaust, so I lent the teacher my copy of Barefoot Gen to show to the class. One of the students, a die-hard Gundum fan, was complaining about how it was obviously American and not real 'Japimation'.

I swear, he called it 'Japimation'

What should his punishment be?
