The Ultramarines had detected some Chaos activity in this fetid swamp, and the combat teams were sent down to the planet's surface to investigate and purge.

Deployment Pattern Omegus!
Image

Foul Chaos Marines spotted!
Image

But firsts, some cultists. Brother Kursk and his mighty heavy bolter take first blood, stitching a line across three cultists and turning them into craters.
Image

Oh, there's quite a few of them...
Image

SGT Andronicus orders the squads to hold overwatch positions and ready their weapons...
Image

The first Chaos Marine is downed! Brother Paulus lands the first hits, and brother Kursk joins in, but his weapon jams and he is forced to soothe the machine spirits. Brother Slab Hardbeef lands the final killing shot... with a krak grenade.
Image

Unfortunately, his rushing out exposed him to enemy fire, which resulted in a few bolter rounds and two frag grenades hitting him. Mission audio logs record the following response: "Bros, I'm fine, I got a tan on the beach last month that hurt more then this." Mission logs also record him casually backhanding a cultist and turning it into mush.

Tactical Squad 1 advances on the Chaos Marines...
Image

...and cuts them down with a torrent of heavy weapons fire and grenades.
Image

Brother Slab Hardbeef rushes forward past a field of defeated Chaos Marines to engage the last cultist in melee combat. Thankfully, he used his knife.
Image

Killboard:
SGT Andronicus: 1 CSM, 2 cultists
Gaius: none
Charred Docken: 2 cultists
Lalkurti Vanas: none
Darman Malus: 2 cultists

SGT Morantor: 2 CSM, 2 cultists
Slab Hardbeef: 1 CSM, 2 cultists
Paulus Scarabeus: 1 cultist
Dimitri Kursk: 1 CSM, 4 cultists
Narkus: none

In addition, Brothers Andrinicus, Gaius, Docken, Scarabeus, Kursk were awarded a Purity Seal for their long and faithful service.

Finally, Brother Kursk was promoted to Space Marine Hero. Accordingly, he has been taken off the active roster and placed into the reserves, to train up the as of yet untested marines.

I been watching this for a while now...

So could I sign on as Tech Bropriest Avarian Moregunz, whose obsession with the quest for MORE DAKKA has led to the Inquisition regarding him as possibly insane, or it too late? :?:

Really, I just want to see what'll happen.

I'd better improve my kill rate, lest I be assigned to be the first to kick in a Chaos temple door or something.

So I'm playing a few missions ahead, and HOLY FUCK I just got butt-raped by this mission. The one where you have to breach the doors of a Chaos fortress? Brother Slab Hardbeef was the last one to die, after single-powerfistedly taking out 7(!) Khorne Berzerkers, 2 Aspiring Champions, and 2 normal CSM. Oh, and a cultist too.

Oh and WTF is that weapon that one-shots my marines and is freakishly accurate? It's not a missile launcher of a plasma cannon...

I may need to rethink how to play this mission.

That's probably a lascannon.

And that mission is easy. Just stay down in your landing area and slaughter everybody as they come, then advance to the fortress and send in your assault marines to murder everyone inside in melee. I cleared out the entire fortress with just my assault marines, while leaving devastators, tacticool guys and the Predator behind to wreck the seemingly endless waves of enemies trying to take the landing site.

IIRC, i simply let the assault marines land on the roof and slaughter everyone at the windows with grenades, then go inside and finish the rest.

+++ CHRONICLES OF THE HOLY SDN CAMPAIGN +++

The second half of the MacGuffin had been located, in this Chaos fortress on the planet below. After much heel-grinding taunting was exchanged between our valiant Captain and his opposite on the Chaos Marine side, drop pods were deployed, bearing Tactical Squad 1, the Devastators, and a squad of Assault Marines, led by none other than Brother Gaius.

Upon landing, Brother Ralfus Manderus was first up, with his heavy bolter at the ready. But what was that enemy that he had not seen before?
Image

Ralfus Manderus - "DOUBLE-TAP BOOM HEADSHOT!"
Image

With no stray shots, Brother Manderus dispatched the new Chaos Marine threat, showing that they were indeed as killable as all the rest.

The squad spread out from their drop pods and arrayed themselves in a loose formation.
Image

Taking up overwatch position, they prepared to see what Chaos forces would present themselves.
Image

Librarian Matteus worked his skills, and quickened the reactions of Brother Paulus Scarabeus, who was equipped with his trusty missile launcher.

Paulus Scarabeus - "OhthatfeelskindastrangeiwonderhowlongittakestowearoffWHEEEtwitchytwitchy..."

His reactions heightened, Brother Scarabeus was the first to spot another new Chaos Marine.
Image

Firing off a snap-shot from his missile launcher, Brother Scarabeus hit the Chaos fiend with a Krak missile. Staggered but not dead yet, it ate several more bolts from Brother Manderus' heavy bolter.
Image

After the tactical and devastator squads dispatched another Chaos Marine on the walls of the fortress, the Assault squad took to the air.
Image

They immediately located another Chaos marine and delivered a beat-down.
Image

Krak grenades took care of one more on the floor below.
Image

Brother Slab Hardbeef and Brother Narkus bunny-hopped their way over to the opposite fortress wall, where they killed another Chaos Marine stationed there.
Image

Meanwhile, Chaos Marines teleported in to the Devastator formation and abducted Sergeant Morantor! They appeared and disappeared so quickly that even the keen heightened reactions of Brother Scarabeus were unable fire at them. However, they had more pressing matters to deal with. Another squad of Chaos Marines and cultists had teleported near them.
Image

Librarian Matteus took command of the Devastator squad, and granted heightened speed to Brother Ralfus Manderus. Taking advantage of this, he gunned down two Chaos Marines and wounded a third.
Image
Ralfus Manderus - "BOOMHEADSHOTHAHAHAHASLOWPOKESCAN'TRUNFROMMEANDMINE!"

Firing from across the engagement zone, Brother Charred Docken provided long-range fire support and took out a Chaos marine who was attempting to sneak up on two engaged Assault Marines.
Image

Brothers Gaius and Darman Malus were busy fighting a Khorne Berzerker, and finally killed him with liberal use of chainsword and krak grenade.
Image

They then jumped down and took out another Berzerker who was foaming at the mouth and looked like he was going to charge up the wall.
Image
Gaius - "Death from Above!"
Darman Malus - "Death from- Hey, you stole my line!"
Gaius - "I'm an assault marine now, it's my line too!"

And they killed one more, who was running past and seemingly oblivious to his comrade falling under the whirr of chainblades.
Image

Meanwhile, Brothers Slab Hardbeef, Siegfried Roy, and Narkus hopped around the fortress applying liberal heel to faces of Chaos Marines.
Image
Image

Brother Slab Hardbeef took care of this new Chaos abomination.
Image
Slab Hardbeef - "Bros, my mom's chihuahua is scarier than this!"

Rushing forward for revenge and to get his hands dirty, Librarian Matteus dispatched the final Chaos marine who had been trying to flank the squads.
Image

With all threats killed and Chaos thoroughly routed, brother Siegfriend Roy retrieved the second half of the MacGuffin.
Image

KILLBOARD:

Tactical Squad 1
SGT Andronicus - No kills, but promoted to Space Marine hero

Odd events in the previous mission. It appears my sergeant has mistaken my stream of invective and imprecation directed at my worthless piece of scrap bolter as a litany directed at our foes and has presented me with plaudits for purity and dedication. Considering the few kills I have made with the infernal device since our landing here have been achieved either by throwing it at the heretic out of frustration or accidently while slamming a fist into the machine, by this time next year it seems I'll be Chaplain.

I volunteer to be the first marine cited for cowardice in the face of the enemy - but not shot, as that would be a waste of training. In penetince and because I'm so damn good at keeping alive, I will be assigned to the most dangerous duties - whatever those happen to be at the time.

Whether it's flailing desperately with a chainsword screaming 'Get the frak AWAY!' with my comms off or banging away with a heavy bolter in a state of panic so sublime it seems like icy calmness, I'll be there. Hating my life.

So basically, an unfavourable-interpretation* Ciaphas Cain who doesn't have the lying skills to pull off the Hero shtick with his superiors, but just. Won't. Die.

* - the favourable interpretaion of Commissar Ciaphas Cain HERO OF THE IMPERIUM! being that he is in fact that heroic, but self-hating, of course.

Kursk is thrilled to have his fellow veterans Charred Docken, Paulus Scarabeus and Ralfus Manderus join him in training the maggots:
Brother Dimitri Kursk wrote:Brothers! Welcome to the shittest assignment in the Segmentum! These new recruits are totally useless! Excuse me a moment...

You!, Yes, you! Drop the Bolter. Don't ever hold it like that again or you'll find yourself missing major pieces of your anatomy! And you there, if you drop your guard in combat even for a moment an enemy will split you in half and enjoy eating what's left.

See what I mean Brothers? These wimpy bastards won't last twenty seconds in battle. Go and try sparring with them, you'll floor the lot of them in about five seconds.

Man I hate this job!
