Re: Godzilla trailer
I think Godzilla is too big for that.
Um, culturally speaking, that is. He's gotten to the point where it's not only possible, but likely, that you've heard of Godzilla long before you actually see a Godzilla movie.

I'd guess there are countries where Godzilla is a generic term for "really big beastie".

Sadly, it wouldn't be much of a match up. The new Godzilla is 3x bigger than Gypsy...and I don't think any of the Jaegers would be able to stand up to the fire breath.

Re: Godzilla trailer
Yeah, the whole head with the "glass" bit would be a very weak point. I think most of the Japanese mechas that had pilots onboard usually put them in a more armored part of the body. Plus, if they are going with Godzilla's usual feeding on nuclear energy then Gipsy's reactors would be lunch for Godzilla.Borgholio wrote:Sadly, it wouldn't be much of a match up. Given the height difference, it'd be a rocket-elbow to Godzilla's crotch. Yeah...that'd probably not be the wisest thing to do.

Re: Godzilla trailer
Kicking a bear in the balls is unlikely to stop it, why would Godzilla be any different? It would just piss him off and result in the Jaeger getting destroyed even faster.
And Original Size Godzilla would probably still wreck a Jaeger, considering his firebreath and ability to regenerate.

I would like to see a Jaeger fight the King of all Kaiju, if only to end all the fanboyism surrounding that film. And the 'snap, crunch' would amuse me.

Re: Godzilla trailer
For a great many films all that's really required in the casting call is a description of what the character is called to do. It's just Hollywood default that they end up being hot and usually white.Napoleon the Clown wrote:No, Godzilla is generally referred to as male. They'd need to talk about Mothra instead. /taking the piss
Personally, I like the idea of casting a few major characters without calling for a specific race or gender. Ripley from the Alien series was originally intended to be a man, but Sigourney Weaver got an audition and knocked it out of the park. And Idris Elba as Heimdall. Both definitely earned the parts.
I don't know how they drew up renfield in the new Dracula series but Nonso Anozie is nailing it hard. Makes me wonder if they got the actor and then wrote the backstory.

IIRC all roles in Alien were written gender neutral, so that they could cast either a man or woman in the role depending on how the actors performed in the auditions.Napoleon the Clown wrote: Personally, I like the idea of casting a few major characters without calling for a specific race or gender. Yeah Ripley was supposed to be a man, and Dallas a woman. But the respective actor and actress did the audition so well, they cast them anyways as they were.

Re: Godzilla trailer
That's the real trick to writing a "strong female character" in my opinion: You write a strong character that only incidentally has two X chromosomes. In a military or quasi-military setting especially, unless you're dealing with a romance plot you should be able to change the character to the opposite sex and make few, if any, changes to the script.Lord Revan wrote:IIRC all roles in Alien were written gender neutral, so that they could cast either a man or woman in the role depending on how the actors performed in the auditions.

Re: Godzilla trailer
Quick thoughts:
This is looking like the Godzilla movie I wanted all my life. I'm also satisfied with the final design, which looks excellent.
Probably been observed before, but this is a great movie to use Ligeti's "Atmospheres" in; 2001 used it to great effect but wasn't explicitly about nuclear annihilation, which was what Ligeti wrote the piece in mind of.
Tying it into the original continuity was more than I'd hoped for; it's thematically smart by not condescending to the audience by insisting that everything about the story be transplanted into modern-day America, helps retain the themes in which the film was made, and also spares the audience an origin story which I'm sure most people are about tired of.
Cranston looks like he's set to deliver in this one, his speech was bone-chilling. I just saw Binoche in Bleu the other day and I'm eager to see what she and the rest have to offer.
Finally, all the jets falling out of the sky... is our third monster Rodan?

Consider me officially hopeful."We woke something up in '54, and tried to kill it with NUKES.... And failed"
I love the atmosphere of the trailer, the hopelessness, the "we are so fucked" attitude. Really makes me hopeful they will focus on the awesome of Godzilla rather than on the military/humans trying to out-awesome it (Admittedly, Jean Reno was deservedly awesome in the '98 movie because... Well, because he's Jean Reno)

That does look like Rodan. I certainly wouldn't complain...Rodan is one of my favorite of the original Kaiju, so having it (him? her?) around would make me happy.TithonusSyndrome wrote:

The MUTO marketing fluff, assuming this shit is to be trusted, fixates on underground caverns like the Hellmouth in Turkmenistan and sinkholes in Ecuador and China. I'd say they're underground somewhere.LadyTevar wrote:I think you're right, it might be Rodan.

The trailer uses that Inception-"BWONG!" effect quite nicely. It doesn't feel as jarring as other trailers trying to imitate it.TithonusSyndrome wrote:I am become death...

Cliche trailer for a cliche disaster movie. Humanity will win by fiat. There will be little development. Cranston will over act. Etc.

The preview was presumably intended for an international audience. Since different places have different release dates, that could be problematic. Usually they pop up in local TV spots.tezunegari wrote:I just wish they would put a release date where the "coming soon" text is...
IMDB has a list of international dates.
