I guess stationary turrets for defense would be the best bet then.
Unless they built a carrier ship for the gun and had the gun not have a warp field. When it's time to use the gun, drop it out with just shields and navigational thrusters, aim the sucker, and go boom.
I'm sure they could figure it out (how to put one on something mobile) given enough time.
