It's both. Or did you miss the question I asked Sea Skimmer about it?
I suppose I did... I shall go check... I am not seeing it. Are you sure you didnt ask via PM?

I could always think of a state religion that doesnt resist change...

Its both, a secular state will not fly here as this is meant to have something of a historic basis.

I was thinking along the lines of a nation that is just coming out of a long dark age to some, love affair with feudalsim to others. The Current ruler, a young king that was educated out of country returns and wants to force his land into the modern era.

He would rely heavily on foreign mercs to fill out his infantile modern infantry and artillery until his people can learn these skills on their own and master them. Think of him as a sort of Peter the Great forcing his backward (or tradional depending on your point of view) nation into an industrial era.

Because his nobility have up until recently been virtually frozen in medieval times with heavy knights charging on the battlefield, he has the finest horse cavalry in the world by virtue of tradition and an unshakable esprit de corps among his cavalry....his infantrymen however, mostly culled from peasant levies leave much to be desired at the moment in terms of martial spirit. They're used to their lords fighting for them and it seems insane to them to march INTO gunfire in formation.

Also extremely monotheistic.

Just a thought by the way, didn't mean to intrude on the devleopments but having watched Gods and Generals all weekend, this era interests me.

Hmm... Something like the Minbari religion...

God is the universe incarnate blah blah... Insert bizzare mating ritual here... blah blah... Insert decadence here... Nerf... Insert loyalty to the self AND to the state here... Insert morals here...

My nation will have broken off from Stravo's about 90 years ago, feeling both that monotheism generally did not work for them and that the nation was not advancing fast enough to keep its citizens safe. My, soon to be, nation got weaponry from surrounding nations and broke away from Stravo's. Following it's turning into it's own nation they almost immediately began focusing on defensive tactics and increasing their technology to the best they can, always afraid of invasion by their mother nation. Stravo's nation meanwhile, with this king, wishes to bring my nation back into it's fold to make itself strong again.

I have already had this ok'ed by Stravo.

I assume we would still be close geographically, and have intermarried rather recently then Cyran?

Yep, that would also mean that our nations still have the possibility of being uneasy about one another, which would be interesting gameplay.

Ah yes. Our lack of cultural ties(as opposed to mine and Dahaks nations) will be fun to play out...

My little force would, mostly, practice a polytheistic religion with elemental gods or goddesses (wind, water, storm, death, wealth etc.) and personal gods (watching over a households or assuring position in the reincarnation queue and stuff like that) that are ancestors who achieved enlightenment.. It would also have reincarnation for the un-enlightened where one gets strange memories and an instinctive skill that one may have learned in another life (like fencing or pottery). One practices the religion, name Ondrium (On-dre-um) by saying prays, when appropriate, and living by the code of the religion. The idea of Ondrium is ascension to godhood though a gaining a perfect and instinctive knowledge about everything, especially things that have a god(dess) watching over or controlling it. Practitioners belive that they are reincarnated until they get it right, and that they retain some but not all of this instinctive understanding.

Very little is written about Ondrium (IE, no real bible) except the code and lists of the gods names. (and all the studies of outsiders attempting to discredit it useing their own religion, Of course)

The code is just a loosely organized set of rules and practices to help one get all the instinctive knowledge you can. Ondriumians who don't follow the code are not punished, as a "whatever works for you" attitude is adopted.

It is known that every thing that happens is not caused by a god and that if someone dies the death goddess (Alyssa) did not necessarily kill them.

The instinctive knowledge that Ondrium revolves around is named Drium. It is attained though experiencing the world to its fullest and though study. Lethargy is the only religious crime. (though cultures and nations will/can have civil crimes)

Edit: typos
Major Edit: deleted last paragraph 'cause I thought it was weak.

Well, Aly, what about "sister" states, which share the language, and some culture, like Austria and Germany?

I'll go for an autocratic monarchy, with most of the actual power running through the Chancellorship.
Religion is based on the Roman mythology, which happened to survive through the ages in that particular Holy Roman Empire.
As the Empire sees the nations around it gaining increased command of the seas, it was forced to pump up it's fledgling war fleet in short order. (Alike Germany was forced in respect to the BRitish Empire).
The military is reigned by a mixture of Roman and Prussian stern military tradition, and thus a very professional military.

Works very for me. My nation instead of islandic will be on a peninsula bordering your own. Both of us will have ocean access and a strong military tradition... And the Roman religion fills my need for a religion. Though my nation will use more of a Constitutional Monarchy rather than an autocracy.

Problem solved.

And we can speak in German back and forth when discussing matters of state and battle plans... It will drive the others crazy... :P

Someone should draw up an MS paint map when we're all done, so we know everyone's geographic relationship and can make stategic decisions.

A coastal country run by a fuedal system. Religion is loosly based on Buddisum, ie-You are born to do a certain task in life, and until all of you tasks are done you reincarnate.

My nation exports weapons and coal. It is more focused on trade than war. I keep an assassin corps around to do quiet work.

I keep a small army around, they are dressed like jaffa(minus the helmets of course)

What are some period weapons?

What is a good population size?

We use a limited monarchy(similar to britain currently, though the monarch has a bit more power) and a couple centuries ago we had a kind that was similar to Henry the 8th, and wanted to divorce his wife, when the church said no, he abolished a state religion altogether instead of plintering off from the church as Henry did.

My nation isnt atheistic per se, just doesnt have a state-backed religion.
Religion was the foundation of the State until the Industrial Revolution and the best I think you could really get away with before then is a philosophical standing instead of it, something like neoplatonism or stoicism. Even then the peasantry would be highly animistic/superstitious.

I believe my government shall be designed, speculatively, upon the idea of a Switzerland which was victorious at Marignano, and thus territorially greater in extant and more militant.

I addressed that in my first post.

Coal is impractical to move significant distances and not a very big commodity at this time. As for weapons, the export market is slim for those as well since almost anyone can make a musket or cannon. Be careful with assassinating anyone, in this period they will almost always result in war while there's few people worth killing by such means.

I keep a small army around, they are dressed like jaffa(minus the helmets of course)
Your army would drop dead from the weight of the armor, nor would it offer protection.

What are some period weapons?
This is not a good sign.

The monotheistic religion will be based around a dualist philosophy, rather manichaean in fact, with a philosophical, unthinking all-creating force, and two opposing entities; the Lord of Justice and the Lord of Deceit; one ruling all good things and the other, all evil things. Recognized are the "Ten Righteous Spirits" -- basically Guardian Angels/Directing Forces, representations of aspects of the Lord of Justice. There are comparable evil aspects of the Lord of Deceit, represented by pagan gods, often. A reforming movement more than a millennia ago culminated in the leader being represented in death as the "Champion of Justice" and semi-divine, a status given by some to the original prophet as well.

More details along with a name, later. I assume that Pablo's version will deny the reverence (though of course outright prayer is not given) given to the Ten Righteous Spirits and in particular to the Champion, and make it a straight up dualism and accuse us of verging towards polytheism.

I'd like my nation to be modeled on Spain. We will have Spanish surnames, etc and have the same devotion that the Spanish did to the one true church...the question is WILL there be a one true chruch, are we going to create an inistitution similar to the Cathloic Church of this period?

That's my goal, if you like the vague concept I've put forward so far.
