Thats not why they weren't used... they weren't used because they were big "HEY WORMS, DINNER IS RIGHT FREAKING HERE". To turn a shield on brought the attention of every Shai-Hulud in like a hundred kilometers or something.

Yes, but they need a navigator onboard during the jump. Are you going to starrt mass-sacrificing navigators?
No-Ships have built in computers that are advanced enough to serve as a replacement for the Navigators limitly (they have some prescience it is believed or just advanced detection systems).
