My Great Uncle was of the first black judges in New Orleans. Lionel C. Collins. His father grew up with future mob boss Carlos Marcellus.
Cool story.
When Lionel was just a lawyer, there was this one case he was on that drew alot of attention from the Klan; harrasment, death threats and such. One day when court was out, Lionel ran across Carlos Marcellus at the court house. "Hey, aren't you Jessie boy?" Jessie being my great-grand father. They chit chatted for a bit and the topic of the Klan came up. "Don't worrie about that anymore" was the last thing he said as he left. All the Klan threats ended that day. Later Carlos Marcellus was one of the mob guys that was thought to be connected to the Kennedy assassination.

In their respective locals, my Grandfather and Great Grandfather made notoriety for themselves.

My grandfather was a ob-gyn in the 50s, so he oversaw the delivery of a good portion of South Philly.

My Great Grandfather was a Cheesmaker in Sicily--who apparently ran afoul of the mob and dissapeared.

That's about all I can recall.

And that's also about as far as I can trace my family tree before it gets consumed by the Cucinotta's and Mazzola's of Italy.

I'm told that I'm directly descended from St. Thomas More on my mother's side, and I'm definetely descended from Hugh O'Neill, who led the Irish resistance in the Nine Years War, and I'm also related to whoever the Baron O'Hagan is at the moment, because Thomas O'Hagan (1st Baron and a Lord Chancellor of Ireland in the 19th Century) is a cousin somewhere down the line.

Eh, best I can do is Niall of the Nine Hostages (the king that brought over Saint Patrick), but that is something my family cannot confirm. Only evidence in my favor is that one entire side of my family is from the appropriate region of Ireland and a majority have names associated with Niall's sons.

There's been a genetic study done, and it suggests 1 in 12 Irishmen are descended from him. (If you don't like New Scientist, clicky for the journal abstract. If this article is accurate, then I'm descended from him too.

I can claim Robert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat.

she wasn't a very ''liked'' person amung our relatives...
especially since were not canadian.

Hurray! I already knew that these guys were related to my paternal grandfather, but I couldn't remember the names. Here they are:

Unfortunately, on my father's side the lineage only goes back to about 1800 (according to my great-cousin, a geneologist), because the son born around then was a bastard.

Huh, that's funny--James and I were just talking about this on Monday.

I know that I have French pirates in my lineage, but I don't have any idea how famous (or, more likely, how not) they might have been. Rest of the family tree is basically peasants, I think.

My great-grandfather was M. Alsky, a prominent Party member, and one of the signatories of the Declaration of 46.

Maybe... uh.. G.W. Bush? I don't know, but I may be related to him somehow. Even if that's just a common German last name... He and his family shame my last name, if it's true, anyway.
