Haven't watched UFC117, but there was an charity MMA event in Tassie the past weekend. Read the hilariously ill-informed coverage here.

This is Darran, one of the guys who was on the UFC trip to Sydney with me - the former Mr Australia and Mr Universe contestant. Doc stoppage r3. The pictures on his Facebook are even better.

To put the GIF in context though, see the scorecards, plus CompuStrike and FightMetric numbers.

That's Nogueira ju-jitsu for you, get the shit beat out of you for the entire fight, then pull off a miracle submission win.
weemadando wrote:My picks:
Silva R1 Sub - I see Chael getting the takedown and getting triangled pretty much immediately. Alternately, he'll catch a knee on the way in during r2.

Alves R3 TKO - Fitch'll survive a while, but assuming that Alves hasn't killed himself in the weight cut, it won't end well for him.

Almeida U.Dec - Hughes is good, but he's not as good as he once was.

Nelson R2 Sub - R1 will be brutal for Nelson but he'll stay alive, get a takedown and control. R2 he'll do the same earlier and end it late.

Dos Anjos S. Dec - Dos Anjos will win the fight, but Guida will probably win the decision.

Davis R1 KO - Seriously, is anyone giving "Sho Nuff The Masta" a chance in this fight - last I saw the tipping percentages were 97/3.

Saunders R2 TKO - no explanation really required.

Struve R2 Sub - just a matter of time really.

Boetsch R1 KO - CABER TOSS!

Hendricks U. Dec - Wrassler v Wrassler. Expect 3 rounds of not great boxing.
Well, let's hope you didn't put any money down on it cause about the only thing that went as predicted was the Silva triangle, and it kinda came a bit late. I can't say I would've done any better myself, I got Fitch by UD, picked JDS and Silva to win and pretty much everything else went pear shaped.

For once Joe Rogan's hyperbolic spasm wasn't. That submission by Hughes was brilliant.

OK, so with Hughes now owning wins over two top Renzo products and Renzo himself in his past three fights, does this mean that his next move is to start going to Renzo's academy and taking lunch money from white belts?

Actually what I want to see is a battle of the fatties now that Mark Hunt is signed with the UFC. They can stand in the middle of the cage and take turns punching each other in the head until someone breaks their hands. They can also punch each other in the body and see whose fat jiggles the longest.

Either that or they can find another Gracie for him to beat up. A couple more wins over Gracies and he'll be the modern day Sakuraba.

He must have busted his sternum with that knee, Lashey was so timid after that, big men who get full mount and can't finish is just sad.

Mindja, the standup being called so that a doctor could check his eye -- then the restart being from standing, instead of Lashley's top position -- was no help at all. Reportedly the referee has a history of just shit bad reffing...

I think you mean KJ Noons instead of Lashley.

A long-time Texas ringside physician, Dr. Jorge Guerrero:
Is there controversy about this? The fighters didn't use anything against the rules. When it's something that's not overtly prohibited or limited, it's usually left up to the doctors at ringside, and we make the call on the spot. I think that's what happened here.
According to him, it wouldn't have been allowed between rounds, but before it? Sure.
Oxygen to me is not an enhancing chemical or a super chemical. I think you have more problems with adrenaline that you would with 02. This is not a top priority for me to limit or decrease usage. It's just unimportant.
On the other hand, here's Nick Lembo, executive director and legal counsel, New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB):
We wouldn't have a problem with the oxygen per se but the canister could contain most any type of vaporized substance in addition to oxygen that could include banned substances and it would be impossible to ascertain such at that point in time.
Finally, Keith Kizer, executive director, Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC):
If a contestant would like to use canned oxygen for a bout, he would need to clear the product with one of the commission's ringside physicians to make sure the product does not contain any prohibited substances or would otherwise adversely affect the bout.
Interestingly, both Guerrero and Dr. Sherry Wulkan (NJSACB's chief ringside MMA physician -- who referred Thiago Alves to the specialist regarding his arteriovenous malformation) discounted the effectiveness of canned oxygen as a performance enhancer.

According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) though, no problem in the officiating with KJ Noons' late shot OR the stand-up in Lashley vs. Griggs. TDLR's position is that the "illegal" knee was already started when the final bell rang (Cageside Seats on the other hand questioned why Gurgel had even been allowed to continue after the "buzzer-beater-that-may-not-have-been" that dropped him at/after the end of round 1), while the referee had stood Lashley and Griggs up because he felt a lack of action*, and THEN saw the cut, hence why he restarted them back on their feet... either way, that was 'giving away' Lashley's mount on Griggs.

* I recall "New Kimbo" Da Da 5000 also getting a convenient stand-up while mounted before going on to win in his pro debut in Miami...

EDIT: According to SI's Josh Gross, King Mo's management "OK'd use of 02 w/Texas commission, ringside doctor, referee (McCarthy got OK from commission) & Strikeforce. Noons in same lockerroom." Also, according to MMA Junkie Lawal has said, the O2 container had no major effect: "People want to make a big deal about it, but it's not a big deal. I used it in training camp for a week, (and) it helped me slow my heart rate down and focus my breathing – that's about it. I could have done it without the oxygen can.""

I'm almost tempted to troll them and rub it in good on the forums.

Don't, it's time that you could spend instead shouting from the rooftops WAR FRANKIE EDGAR.
MiddleEasy wrote:It's a lot to ingest at this point in the night and you may cling onto the brim of a toilet and regurgitate it later tonight, but Frankie Edgar is the best lightweight in MMA. We all just need to accept this fact as part of our lives.
Oh, and despite it being mainly grappling that went to a decision, from play-by-plays Maia vs. Maranda sounded quite good.

Palhares missed a leglock on Nate so IT MUST'VE BEEN GREASE!! Nate slipped out of the leglock and Palhares was gesturing at the ref that there must've been grease or something and not defending himself, at which point Nate dove in with a punch and knocked him out.

But I think the highlight of the night was Joe Rogan's commentary, according to my husband he gets a lot of grief for biased commentation and "sounding like a rat on crack", but boy, I haven't laughed so hard in ages. In one of the fights both fighters were kneed in the happy place and one of the guys went down in severe pain. At which point we were treated to the following:
Joe Rogan wrote:"Get your hand out of your pants this is a family show!"
"If you can't grab your balls on Spike TV, where can you?"

I believe Marquardt's explanation was that he'd worked up a sweat before his entrance so that he'd be more slippery... in a legal way.

Yet to see the Fight Night, but courtesy of UltimateFighter.com saw that. Holy shit Bruce Leroy is awesome. I mean, sure he's only TUF level awesome at the moment, but that was a really entertaining fight.

Also Armenians. Seriously. Whoever was editing that TUF premiere was a genius though to intercut the "this the best feeling" and "I'm so happy" stuff with footage of the guy vomiting.
