Hey, we never were allied on paper- we just cooperated in the mutual rape of an unsuspecting power.

Fortunatly, the GA has my loyalty on paper.
I still considered you an ally even if it wasn't on paper. And that as far as I'm concerned what makes an ally, not little pieces of paper. If you've got no problem screwing me, what makes that paper any more valuable than TP when you can get a deal?

For the same reason that mercantilism was effective in a period of real life history. There are vast, untapped, and largely unclaimed stretches of space from which you can extract natural resources virtually without limit. The best thing to do is to play the same game as the British did after the rennaissance. Grab as much territory as you can lay hands on and exploit the hell out of it. The markets in other countries aren't overly developed at this stage in the game, making Free Trade not as attractive as it might otherwise be.
Wow. That makes a great deal of sense. Hmm.
There's a reason why I've concentrated upon military alliances. Free trade isn't all that useful when you have vast tracts of space just outside your borders, which as it happens, you have to cross before going anywhere else.

A couple diplomacy points:

I love playing the Kzin, with their "total asshole" approach to these things.

Just make a deadline on that ultimatum and start the war. Pissing around over the blame is a waste of time

One of these days, Pablo... One of these days...

We'll be happy allies! and the whole Galaxy will rejoice in peace and happiness. Azegart preists will play volleyball with Aquarian diplomats! Commonwealth Legionnaires will dance with pretty SKS celestials! Stuartian executives will share meals of raw sthondat with Kzinti!

Everyone will be happy.

I would like some fawning loyalty, thank you very much. Save the love for those who don't hold the controls of an awful, militaristic powermonger...

Christ, the cool stuff always happens while I'm asleep... :)

And I'm paranoid. Which means everything gets blasted out of space, which doesn't exactly appear or enter where they are told to.
Shoot first, Ask questions later :D

That's what you get for trusting the wrong people.

He probably just made a mistake- it is unimportant, though. We run sovereign nations beholden only to those we wish to be beholden too.

Maybe, but it does go to show you that you have to be careful.

International politics, man, just took a course on it. Historically, a nation's responsibility to other nations is inversely proportional to it's ability to exert force.

Oh, I know that's how it works. I'm just noting you've acquired a nice set of client states.
