DivX/XviD DVD Players

Post by JLTucker »

I am thinking about purchasing a DivX and XviD compatible DVD player because I have a shitload of .avi's that I would like to burn. It is a pain in the ass to convert them. Does anyone own a DVD player that reads both the DivX and XviD format? Is it any good?

I believe Laird owns one. They're fairly commonplace in Canada, iirc. Amazon seems to have a number available for around $150-$200, such as this one. As long as your videos aren't using some funky version of .xvid, you should be fine.

I've got a Phillips DVP642 that's served me well. Cost me CAN$40, makes the movies look better than they did on my computer (mostly because of the decreased detail of a TV screen making the artifacting less noticeable, but still) and can be made region-free just by opening the tray and pushing a few buttons on the remote.

The only problem is that it only displays the first dozen or so letters in filenames, which is a bit annoying when you've transferred a full season of a TV show onto a couple of DVDs and want to find an individual episode.

The Oppo 971H can play DivX/XviD files.

That's almost the exact same thing I linked to in my post.

I have a Kaco DX-721, it plays all the divx/xvid files I have to date, Mpeg I/II, Mp3, wma/wmv. I bought it for like 50 bucks last May. I highly recommend it.
