annoying program on atheism....

Post by petesampras »

If anyone is in the uk, check out the program on channel 4 right now - "the trouble with atheism".

It is the most ridiculous strawman attack on atheism I can imagine.

Lots of talk about not being able to 'prove' god doesn't exist.

Hopefully it will get better, but I doubt it.

Hurray, now they are pointing to the fact that scientific theories change.

Therefore a better theory than Darwinian evolution will surely eventually come along.

Therefore it can't be accepted.

And treating Darwinian evolution as a 'religion' which preaches we must kill off or prevent the 'unfit' from breeding. Hence the nazis, etc.

Not only are these strawmen, they are spectacularly stupid and unoriginal strawmen at that.

The closing line was the best...

since it is not be proven one way or the other, surely the most scientific answer is to say that god may or may not exist and leave it at that

I love these network programs that claim to present a "fair" and "accurate" portrayal of atheism. Nothing more than a thin veneer of bullshit for what amounts to "atheism is amoral".

Why do they confuse Darwinism with Social Darwinism? Not very original are they?

Ugh. You can't prove that pink, flying elephants don't exist either but that doesn't make it true

It can't be as bad as this one. When will these morons start thinking of some new arguments? That is, arguments which weren't debunked centuries ago.

The funny thing is, when these morons use old debunked arguments and we rip them apart, with wait for it... old arguments, they will accuse us of using old arguments and presume that somehow weakens our case.

Well maybe when they use new arguments, we might actually need to use new counterarguments as well.

Wow...they misrepresent atheism in the first five minutes, and then spend the next forty tirelessly attacking the wrong idea :P

It's like an armored division engaged in heavy combat, winning a battle effortlessly, only to realize they attacked in a completely different direction than they were supposed to.

Hmm...yes, it would appear you are indeed right. So it's more like the enemy attacking, breaking through the lines, taking all strategic objectives and winning the campaign while the division tirelessly attacks a line of empty bunkers month after month after month...

Yes, just leave it at that. Don't look any deeper. Don't consider the probability that god exists. don't challenge those who live their lives around the assumption that god exists. Just leave it at "maybe so, maybe not."

Why don't these people just state outright that they don't care about science or reason and "leave it at that"?
