Jesus is god... logic?
Ah man it was hilarious today. We were having pursuasive speach presentations in English and this kid got up and proceeded to explain to the class how you could logicly explain Jesus was the son of god.
Ok this is how it went
In order for jesus not to be the son of god three things would have to be true. Jesus was either a lier, a lunatic, or those who wrote about him were dillusional.
He proceeded to explain jesus was not a lier through passages in the Bible, and did the same for proving he was not a lunatic. He then went on to explain that all the deciples could not have been liars because they had nothing to gain and everything to loose, and how unlikly it was that all eleven of them were dillusional/insane.
When he was giving his speech I wrote all of his arguments down and very enthusiastically made him aware of his giant leaps in logic. I also made light of the huge mistake using the bible(a very bias and unreputable source) as a reference point. This is when the fun began!!
It was me and three others against a class of thirty five students. A huge argument of science, logic, and common sense vs. the Bible in "PRAISE THE LORD!!!" Lake Arrowhead, California.
Nothing was resolved of course because they're all fundies but it was still fun. The kid wants to have a private disscussion with me now about evolution.(I suppose to save my soul)
Nothing really relevent, I just wanted to explain to you all why it was such a good day and if you have any suggestions or simply just want to mock this idiot, by all means, GO AHEAD.

With one mighty click of the mouse, he stumbled upon the old and lame "Lord, Liar, Lunatic" argument. Man, he didn't even try.Orion wrote: In order for jesus not to be the son of god three things would have to be true. Jesus was either a lier, a lunatic, or those who wrote about him were dillusional.

I would really hate to grow up in certain parts of America. Here, we had a token christian in the class. He didn't speak much, by some reason. Maybe fear of being ridicularized.
Oh, and the high school Moral & Religion class (always optional) vanished to unexistence due to lack of interested costumers.

I can't think of a place in the U.S. that is free of fundamentalists. I would imagine Portugal has it's share of old school, extra-superstitious Catholics, though.Colonel Olrik wrote:I would really hate to grow up in certain parts of America. The San Francisco Bay Area is pretty good. A lot of 'harmless' Christians, to be sure, but I've never actually met a fundie in the traditional sense. I've seen a JW church around here, though I've never met a JW. There are a lot of Catholics, but they're not annoying. There are also large populations of Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims.Frank Hipper wrote:I can't think of a place in the U.S. that is free of fundamentalists. But overall, I've encountered light and passive resistance to atheism, but no real fundies.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

It has a few, of course. But we don't hear them on the media, and there are too few of them to make any kind of pressure in society. They are completely out of the State (we never hear "God bless you all" from any president, in fact our present and last presidents were self-professed atheists, for example) and out of the schools.Frank Hipper wrote:can't think of a place in the U.S. that is free of fundamentalists. The number of priests is vastly decreasing, expected to be reduced by half in the next ten years.
The rest of the E.U generally follows this trend. No matter how badly the Pope feels about it, the fact is that most E.U countries are atheist, when compared to the U.S.

The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

America is by far the worst seat of hardline Christian fundie stupidity in the world. When I look at religious broadcasting from the states, I just shake my head; these people are complete imbeciles. They also have the dubious distinction of agreeing with Osama Bin Laden that 9/11 was the hand of God.

Stick to one point and don't let him/them direct the conversation. This statement above is somewhat true, if lacking (eg. another possibility: someone later alterted the text of the bible). Ask what the end result of any three of these things being true is: that the bible is false. If they are unable to grasp the concept that if Jesus was a liar then the passages are false... there is no point in continuing the conversation. You are only participating in an excercise in futility. In order for Jesus not to be the son of god three things would have to be true. Jesus was either a liar, a lunatic, or those who wrote about him were dillusional
You pointed this out to them, but if they are unable to grasp the concept, I would simply keep pointing out that they failed to prove that Jesus was not a liar. They will probably be annoyed at you and tell you to change the topic... but that is only their natural reaction to ignore what is against their beliefs.
What was the teacher's take on this discussion? Did he/she remain neutral?

To be fair Mike, most American's think those assholes are well.... assholes. And like or not the Fundies are the ones that are most adimant and agressive. They simply drown out the sane people.

Ahhhh. I remember the day when I found out that a girl I was trying to date (read: boink) was the daughter of classical hard-nosed fundies. I was at her house waiting to pick her up, and passed the time chatting with her dad, who I genuinely liked.
Then the mother came out and, knowing I was a student of science, said, "Oh, did you hear the news? There were these scientists who discovered that the earth really is less than 6000 years old. Of course, you probably already knew that, but it's nice to finally hear the truth from professional scientists out there."
I was 16, so I just made a little 'um-hmm' noise of affirmation and smiled, and that was the end of that. Now, if I knew then what I know now, I would neither have let that argument go nor had sex that evening.

This isn't really true. So we have a lot of assholes and a lot of gullible people. When the population's over a quarter of a billion, and a Bush is in charge of the government (which runs education) there do tend to be a lot.Durandal wrote:Stormbringer wrote:To be fair Mike, most American's think those assholes are well.... assholes.
