My brother plays magic.

There's Apprentice. But for me the whole point of playing magic is the smell of the cards, holding the cards in your hands, owning the card, and of course the art. And I haven't kept up with the rules for five years now. I'm sure I could get into it if I wanted, and it's probably a better use of my time than computer games. But magic online with Apprentice and Netdraft, forget it sorry. I need the pictures, I need to hold a booster in my hands and open it up.

Hopefully I won't get banned for this.
I do play MTG, almost entirely vintage (but I may start attending Legacy GPQs, and a Legacy GP or two). I am currently roommates with Mat Endress (generally considered amongst the top 10 current Vintage players of Team GWS, arguably the best team in vintage. I am very knowledgable about vinage, am pretty good at theory, and am generally ok (maybe top 100 in vintage). I am currently testing Ichorid, and play some Gifts, some fish (Urbana-fish or GWS counterbalance), and could probably top 8 a small local tourney with GWS oath, DeMarrs oath, GWS bigdudes.dec, and maybe Pitch-long on a good day.
If you want to talk vintage just PM me, I also can get MWS (magic workstation) and would be happy to play over that.

Years since I played tho.

Used to play a straight red, that seemed to be bi-polar, not sure if it was trying to focus on goblin weenie madness (with plenty of associated cards to beef them up, to the point where every goblin could gain +8/+4 Mountainwalk), or on a direct damage beatdown. Never really entered any tournaments that I can remember. I was far too young at the time, and there were never all that many tournaments here in Australia to begin with.

I played, had a DCI card, never ranked high, but finished a respectable three in most sealed deck tournments. Drafts were my favorite and won a time or two.

I never bought much in the way of cards, but thanks to lots of sealed and draft toury's I ended up with about three thousand cards now sitting in a box upstairs.

But as for decks, never dismiss the Kitsunes from Kamigawa, white, protection from everything! Gain life X life every turn, and tap to gain X life again!

Used to play Magic often in the CiC with the fire controllers and the damage chief.

Ah, the Kitsunes, I prefered the Snakes and Samurai from that set.

White/Green Samurai Deck. Konda and Takeno + Elvish Piper Ftw.

My new snake rebuild deck is working 40times better then what was around at the time:

Mana Base: 19 forests, 1 Pendal Haven.
Mana Accelerant:
4 Lanowar Evles
4 Sakura Tribe Elders
4 Yavimaya Dryad

Main Deck:
4 Harmonize
2 Sundering Vitae
2 Fists of the Ironwood
1 hunting moa
3 Orochi Eggwatchers
1 Sachi, Daughter of Seshiro
1 Seshiro the Annointed
4 Essense Wardens
4 Evolution Charms
4 Doubling Seasons
2 Orochi Hatcheries
1 Epic Struggles

Essense Wardens + Doubling Seasons + Orochi Hatchery = Big Win.
4 Evolution Charmes

I played it, only with friends now. I've already got the Power Nine when Magic was new, and now don't give a fuck with the new stuff, but I'll buy a few cards that catch my eye for the hell of it.

Maybe one day I'll sell the collection for a small sum.

Oh you child!
Yes, I play Magic. I have been playing since Revised/TheDark (If you're wondering, that's 1994. I think.) I've played in the first Arena touneys, still have the card with the little stickers on back for Tempest 97, Winter 97, Spring 97, Harvest 97, Autumn 97, Tempest 98. I re-joined the Arena a couple years back, and the young man was shocked to see the player ID number I had.

My main decks are in one of the original "Color" boxes... I have the one for Green and the one for Artifact. My life counter is a 1998 Reaper Miniture-produced "Talisman ProCounter"; green enamel over lead pewter, with the dragon that I myself spent a couple days painting green and dry-brushing for the 'perfect' look. I'm amazed the gloss-finished paint's still hanging in there, honestly.

My decks are a mix of whatever cards I can get my hands on. I have near-complete sets of Revised thru 6th Ed, plus Chronicles, Fallen Empires, IceAge (not the new one, dammit), Mirage/Visions, Weatherlight, Urza's Saga, and the last one I bought was the first Kamagawa.

I'm old, ok? I've looked over the newer cards and shook my head at how frakkin UnBalanced they are, compared to the first 5 editions. I remember when a frakkin Scryp Sprite (1G, Flying) was something to fear, because it was a second-turn flyer that could plink you to death if you didn't get up a blocker, or when *Everyone* played 'Tim' the Prodigal Sorcerer if they could.

How old am I? I still have a Land-Destruction deck with a Demonic Horde. I have a Merman deck. I have my "80% Deck", blue/white birds that wins 8 games of 10. I have my Mirage/Visions "Ka-Niggit" deck, which screws with people's minds because of the 'ancient' Flanking rules. I gave Nitram my Goblin Deck... with a Goblin King, fer Christsake. (He beats me with it often)

So, do I play Magic?
No. There's no one that I've wanted to play with, because they've all got the Newest and Greatest that's nerfed all my 'ancient' combos.

gain life is nothing if you cant get it going by turn 4.

Nah I like an oldschool take awhile and build up game.

Had one of those today...I ended it quickly.

Doubling Seasons + Orochi Hatchery + 3 Essence Wardens

40 1/1 Snakes pop out I gain 120 Life(I had been at 36) so I was at 156.

My enemy had 2 essence wardens and had been at 16 life so he was at 96 life.

I play Shesiro(all snakes get +2/+2) and attacked on the next turn for 120 damage.

Indestructable is nothing. give the creature -X/-X where X is more then its toughness, it dies. Remove it from game, bounce it, take control of it.

To pull that off you needed three cards and plenty of Mana. But I've seen worse combo's, hell there are so many one trick broken decks out there that explote certain cards to do infinite fireball combo's, or infinite creatures.

But I know what you mean. And I remeber the days of "Tim", we called him "Timmy" but nothing said fun like plinking your enemy to death. I started during 3rd Ed, bought Homelands, Ice Age and the rest and worked my way up to Ravinica block but I've stopped there due to moving into a CCG hellhole that is Ohio.

But I hate the way Magic has turned, make your deck small enough and without enough cards and it does not matter what your enemy brings unless he's solid Blue Control, because if you get the three cards you need the game is won.

Honestly the new set, Planar Chaos doesnt seemed to be massively overpowered compared to Ravnica Block. They've "Shifted" old cards into the new set and have changed their color...and remade black lotus(Lotus Bloom) cant play it from your hand tho. It has to be removed from game for 3 turns then comes into play.

I started playing at Ice Age, sort of petered out arround Mercaddian Masques(where I built my last and most used deck, the Rebel Deck) and have bot sporaticly over the past years(probably the most I've dumped on was the previous to the newest set, Time Spiral or something like that for the nostaligia)

I stopped playing years ago, and gave most of my cards to my best friend. But I kept a few...

Yup, They reprinted White Knite into Red. Blood Knight 2 for a 2/2 Pro White Creature. Love him in my Mono Red Curb Stomp deck. They reprinted Giant Growth into red as well....Brute Force.

I stopped playing Magic years ago. I was never really into it anyway, my best friend played it, and gave me cards so I could play too. Hundreds of cards. I remember once I had a really nasty Sliver deck... I was an inexperienced noob in a 4-way game, and curbstomped two experienced players with nasty decks in the span of two turns... then I ran out of tricks, and my best friend owned me, but still, it was fun. Tribal Unity + Hordes of Slivers = Ouch.

It's not really my kind of game, but it can be fun. I love the artwork, though. There's one card called "Silver Seraph", which has really nice artwork. It's similarity to my nickname is pure coincidence, however, as I was using this nick a few years before I ever saw that card. Most of my cards are strewn around and in very poor shape, but I try to take care of that card.

My last real game was the Mercadian Masques (I spell that right?) pre-release.

I used to be pretty good. But years of being out of practice and my knowledge being primarily restricted to the old sets probably means that I'd suck (besides I hate the new card border.)

As for knowing famous magic players, I touched Brian Finkel's (I think I got that right) arm once... :P

For you old timers, I don't understand it. I quit Magic because I don't have time for it, not because I don't like the new cards anymore or they ruin my combos.

Indestructable a bad ability? Come on, cards with indestructable are so expensive. And terror, one black and one colorless to destroy target non-black creature... try and find cards like that in the new set. The latest I looked at took four mana to do the same thing.

If Magic were so unbalanced as you old timers claim now, it wouldn't have lasted so long. Type I decks are still the most powerful, the power nine are the most broken cards in magic and worth thousands of dollars. If you guys are as old timer as you say you are you will crush anybody who plays the newer cards.

The reason why you can't enjoy Magic anymore is because you're looking at it the wrong way. The way to play magic is go to the local card shop and do Friday night draft. Drafting's the best. It usually costs like 10 bucks and you play the whole night and get cards to boot. If you're good you win the pot and if you know the cards you could pluck out a card worth the whole entry fee and sell it back to the store.
Booster draft: Players each receive three booster packs of 15 cards. After being seated around a table, each player simultaneously opens one booster pack, selects a single card, and then passes the rest to the next player over. After all players have drafted fifteen cards, they each open their second pack, and drafting continues. Players examine privately the cards they receive; direct communication between drafters is not allowed. A booster draft normally comprises eight players, but sometimes fewer will suffice. Once players have built their decks, they compete against the other players in the draft.
If you want to play Standard Type II of course your cards are not going to match up... they'll be either two powerful or too weak, you think they'd keep the card game static all these years give me a break.

And I am a magic novice and get this from just watching my brother play. Trust me, go draft, it's a lot more fun, the smell of opening a brand new booster, feeling a brand new card. If you want to make competitive type II decks the right way to do it is look up cards on the Internet and do a lot of research, but if you don't have the patience for that why not keep everybody on an equal playing field where the person with the most money doesn't necessarily win... do draft, the person who knows most about the cards and gets lucky a bit wins, and you don't know what it feels like for someone to pass you an incredible rare or exactly the card you've been looking for .

When I lived in Melbourne (Victoria) I used to regularly play against a friend.
I am still interested in Magic, still collect it, do a lot of thinking & writing about Magic theory and create new decks and adapt a number of my older decks with newer cards. However, I don't currently play it except solo [which it is a good game for]. At some stage I will again start playing it with others.

The new comprehensive rules are only available via the internet, and the interpretations of how some cards work are a bit strange.
Back in the days of 4th edition there was a book that had a comprehensive explanation of how those rules worked with examples, and though the new rules were intended to be simpler they can in practice be more complex.

I hate the change they made to how Kors now work [used to be able to transfer damage to another of your creatures, now that damage transfer is targeted so can't transfer say red damage to protection from Red creatures].

If you want to know more a good place to go is http://www.mtgsalvation.com - I am RebelmageX there.
Despite some flaws and its controversial collection aspect MTG is a great game.
