My Ping Quit
I'm having a strange computer issue. I really want to install Hamachi so I can better run my own private gamey things and avoid stupid Gamespy. Stark would agree with me that Gamespy sucks, and it a needlessly retarded way to run a game, and a VPN should be the best alternative.
So I got Hamachi, and want it to run, but it can't resolve the mediation servers. The first step is to run a tracert to see what the snag is. Sadly, when I do tracert or ping, nothing happens.
Not as in it hangs, but nothing. I do ping whatever, and instead of failing the ping or whatever, it just gives me a blank line and a new C:\Crap:_ line to put in a new command.
Seriously, WTF? I can't ping or trace a damn thing anymore. I ran the Winsock fix and it didn't do shit. I've recently uninstalled Norton Security Center because it was giving Hamachi a lot of issues, and have Zonealarm... but this is just dumb.
Seriously, something is awry with my computer. Can anyone give me some idea of what it might be, what I should try, and how to fix this no-ping thing? And, possibly, how to set up Hamachi as a VPN?

Turn OFF the program control in ZoneAlarm and see if the ping goes through then. ZA can prevent ping and tracert commands and if it has been told to block them, or just decided to, you can get this kind of result.

Additionally, check for another command named 'ping' somewhere else on the computer. Just do a search for ping.* and see what comes out. I've seen a virus before that created dummy versions of system commands like PING and TRACERT and such, earlier in the path, so you couldn't access the real things.

Do not forget Ping / icmp type 0 for reply and icmp 8 for outgoing
All about icmp
EDIT
You need to allow icmp reply for ping in the fiewall.

I don't have the purchased version of ZA, just the demo. I just wanted something basic--I had just uninstalled Norton, hoping that would get Hamachi working.
I have two ping.exe files, one in windows\servicepackfiles\i386 and the other in windows\$ntservicepackuninstall$.
Those don't sound like viruses. When I type in ping.exe into my console, I get the ping instructions, so it knows how to prompt me how to ping. I ask it to give me timeout info, speed, packet info, and nothing. It's like it's on strike.
Oddly, I can still connect to the net just fine.

As for disabling the program controls, that didn't do anything. I set them to off, and it didn't matter. I can't view the other computers in my workgroup either. This has all been a real nightmare, and it's why I usually just stop trying. Network stuff is like a Gordion Knot to me, despite my understandings of computing, as it's something I don't get a chance to purchase, install, and control.
I'm operating on an administrator-cleared account on this computer too.
So... what's the next step? Reinstall ping? ;p

Heh, what level of internet and local security is ZA set to? Try setting it to medium.
On that note, I don't know if this is in the demo version or not, but assumming you have program control, this is what the ping setup should look like.
Obviously, the picture looks horrible, but thats my image manipulation skills.
Generally, try running ping from cmd?

How do I set that up? It asks me what the program is, but I don't know where those things are.
Plus, even when I use my computer with ZERO firewall going, I get jack shit from ping. So it's not ZA. I just restarted, with ZA and MSFirewall set to off on startup (so it's not even in memory or anything) and it's still dead in the water.

Okay, if it's dead in the water while ZA is dead, then I'm not sure.
The procedure for manually adding programs to the Zone Alarm program list is rather simple, Program control->Programs->Add->Add specific -> Set permissions.
Anything further? I wasn't clear on what your question was.

Alright, I've finally gotten deeper into the progress of getting Hamachi to work, and it only works in safe mode. I have no hardware firewall, I've uninstalled Norton, and Zonealarm doesn't turn itself on during startup so it shouldn't block anything. Windows firewall is also disabled.
But it still won't let me run it when I'm not in safe mode. Is there a tool or some procedure one could use to figure out what piece of trash it is still garbling up my computer? Is it possible that Norton, even uninstalled, is still closing stuff down?
