Scanning software

I was wondering, is there some kind of universal scanning program that lets you plug your scanner and use it? The reason Im asking is that the software I got with my HP PSC 2110 is crappy beyond words.

Not on Windows AFAIK. Doesn't XP have a (crappy) scanning interface builtin?

XSane is pretty good, *nix only though (I guess runnable inside VMWare).

I thought image editing software could retrieve images from scanning devices.

Most of them can, assuming the scanner is TWAIN compliant, IIRC.

I thought they just simply loaded up the scanning app, and sucked the images from them? At least that's how my Umax 2000U worked on Windows.
