EVA news from the International Space Station

Post by metavac »

This story caught my eye:
NASA wrote:Cosmonauts to Install More Debris Panels on Wednesday Spacewalk

Expedition 15 spacewalk Two International Space Station cosmonauts will begin a spacewalk of a little over five hours from the Pirs docking compartment airlock about 10:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday. They will install a section of Ethernet cable on the Zarya module, install additional Service Module Debris Protection (SMDP) panels on Zvezda, and deploy a Russian scientific experiment.

Five SMDP panels were installed by station Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov on May 30. During that 5-hour, 25-minute spacewalk they also rerouted a Global Positioning System antenna cable. On Wednesday they will install 12 additional panels. They also will install the Ethernet cable on the Zarya module and a Russian experiment called Biorisk on Pirs.

Crew timeline for 30 May 2007 here (PDF). If you're interested, there's an entire section dedicated to crew timelines.

Question for knowledgeable people. How do you estimate the amount of debris influx for a given orbit?

I suspect that at this point we have some empirical data on which to base and educated guess

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job.
