Passport Hard Drives

Post by Master of Cards »

Ok i'm in the market for a passport hard drive that can be run off a laptop with only one usb slot.
It needs
1) over 100gb
2) near 100 bucks

You can probably save some cash by buying a laptop drive and an enclosure separately. Plus you get some flexibility that way (can use the drive in a laptop later on). Almost every 2.5" enclosure is exclusively USB powered (some of them come with two connectors with one being data+power and the other additional power, but modern drives all seem to work with only one).

I've also heard of many problems with the Passport line in particular: they apparently don't work on many powered USB ports. They may need to draw more than 500mA, so it won't work with many boards. This basically makes them useless as no-brand 2.5" enclosures work fine as Netko says.

7200RPM drives seem to require more power. So make sure your enclosure allows 2 USD cable outputs; one for power and one for data.
