Robotech live action movie

Post by Jade Owl »

Aparently Tobey Maguire is going to star/produce a Robotech Movie.

I really don't know how I feel about this. Transformers was one thing, but I don't think the robotech mechas would translate well in a live action movie. And there no actress on this Earth good enough to make Min Mey likeable.

I may not be much of an anime fan, but is it really necessary to tie all three stories together with the protoculture business? If they're planning a trilogy for adults/teenagers, couldn't they use the original Japanese plots, and just have them set in the same universe? From what little I know about the original Japanese Macross Proto-culture ancestors, it seems like that would be a much "richer mythology" than the Robotech plot of the one small ship somehow being the only source of this magic energy stuff that two entire civilizations uproot themselves to obtain.

Robotech is basically three anime series mushed together into one and repackaged for American consumption. One of those series is SDF Macross.

Macross = a story, Robotech = three unrelated shows hacked together and edited by an idiot.

Macross would be fine by itself - it's very unlikely a single movie could do the whole silly Robotech 'lol invid' stuff anyway.

I'm sure Robotech's hacktackular origins will have absolutely no effect on the film, for some reason.

Like the franchise they are basing a film on has any real factor on the plot of the film. Come on people.

Or are those considered "Hacked and butcherd" too?

I also want to see a live action 'Macross' movie, but how can I be certain "Maguire, WB attack the big screen with 'Robotech'" isn't a hoax?
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

They're not too bad if you ignore the "thinking cap" nonsense and the last book. The last book is just one big mindfuck. Other than that, the Macross, Southern Cross, and MOSPEADA books follow the episodes fairly well. The Sentinels books didn't have episodes to follow, but IIRC the authors worked off the scripts and series bible, so it's moderately close to what Sentinels would have been.

However, from Stark's POV, it's still hacked and mushed because it's based off Macek's glomming together of the three series because none was long enough for syndicated TV at the time.

Actually, I'd forgive anything if they faithfully recreated a VF-1, but I'm not holding my breath.

Why not go after 80's kitsch? It worked with Transformers, it'll likely work with GI Joe...Robotech falls under this.

At this early, not going to say bad or good given we have all but a maybe in the works and nothing else.

Does Robotech include one with the bikes that transform into body armor? I might rent that one on DVD.

If you want bikes that turn into power armor you could just buy Mospeada on DVD.

Never mind the fact that Mospeada is a Macross ripoff with poor animation and little continuity but it's kinda fun in a retarded way.

I neaver really liked her anyway... I always prefered Lisa/Misa.

Yes, it does. It is the part known as "The new generation". It was originally known as Mospeda in Japan.

Even within the bits of Robotech that were stolen from Macross, they turned most of the significant plot elements into either less interesting versions of themselves, or just outright stupid.

A real live action Macross movie, with all sorts of transforming fighter plane action, giant aliens, and pop stars, would be nice, but they'd really need to write a new story for it, and they haven't done new stories very well for a while. (especially not Macross Zero, that was shit, and I even managed to put up with Macross 7 Dynamite)

LISTEN TO MY SONG!

Thread hijack, Macross Plus has been remastered and released on R2 DVD. Comes with a booklet full of information full of never before seen lineart and an extra DVD filled with stuff like the PSX game opening, commercials, and a vignette of Shoji Kawamori making a fool of himself while doing research.

I think I can boil down my distaste of Robotech to "protoculture is a plant."

I'd say that would doom any production on grounds of insulting the public's intelligence, but I somehow don't feel like that's coming into play here.

A plant that powers reactors.

I wouldn't worry about a VF-1 being in any Robotech production. Tatsunoko productions and Harmony Gold by way of the license do not own anything in the original Macross, just the animation itself. Only Big West has the right to authorize future projects based on Macross.

I'm vaguely horrified by the idea, but Transformers was actually passable, and the thought of that in live-action terrified me.
Now, if they actually have the scene in which the SDF-1 fires it's Reflex cannon for the first time and creams two Zentreadi scout ships... I might just go and see it at the movies just for that.

Except that's not going to happen. Robotech is now excusively dedicated to raping the corpse of Mospeada. Even Shadow Chronicles featured no recognizable Macross stuff. The half Zentradi chick was referred to a "half-alien" and all the robots were just wanked out Mospeada robots.

IF we see a Robotech movie, it's probably going to end up being a re-imagining of show, much like the Transformers live action film..due to reasons listed previously by VF5SS (Big West vs Harmony Gold/Tatsunoko).

And besides, we have Macross Frontier to look forward to!

Well, considering that in the Robotech timeline, the Macross stuff is about twenty years out of date, of course they're going to gloss it over when trying to continue the story. Which, if you've forgotten, ended with Mospeada.

Some trampling on continuity is going to be somewhat nessisary, as Robotech's events started in the ninties if my memory is correct.
