Media player software is one of the things about computers where I usually have little idea of anything but the very basics, so I turn to the rest of you for some advice.
The problem is that on my machine, WinAmp is acting rather strangely. On my user profile, it works quite normally as it should. On my girlfriend's user profile it does not. Namely, on her profile the volume controls on WinAmp seem to have two settings: Really fucking loud and a nuclear device going off. Generic sound settings are the same on both profiles and so are WinAmp settings (or they should be, seeing as how I haven't tinkered with them and she doesn't know how to tinker with them), but on her side you can only have the volume set at 1% or the furniture starts to shake and dust fall down from the ceiling. On my profile, I need to jack the WinAmp volume control to 80% or more to get the same volume.
What could be causing this? The only difference is that WinAmp was installed from my profile, but set for all users, so I suppose something in that process could have caused it, but I'm stumped.

Why is it so goddamned hard to get little assholes like you to admit it when you fuck up? Is it pride? What gives you the right to have any pride?

any info on your audio drivers/audio-card/speaker set up?
Y'all might have the windows volume controls set to different volumes on the different accounts, or the sound-card volume could be set differently etc.

Audio card is the integrated SoundMax HD Audio on the Asus motherboard with the latest XP drivers set to the AC97 compatible install since those are the connectors on the case (it can run either AC97 or HD mode). Speakers are Labtec Pulse 285 speakers with subwoofer, placed on either side of the monitor and subwoofer behind the monitor.
I'll check the SoundMax audio control panels and see if that gets me anywhere. The basic Windows volume control is set to max on both accounts. I'll post the findings as soon as I've done the checking.

The volume of winamp is also controlled by one of the sub controls in the system volume control (wav I think, but not sure). That could be your problem. I'm not booted into windows at the moment, so I can't be more specific.

If all else fails, you could try forcing Windows to re-create the user profile. Logged in as admin, rename your girlfriend's user account to something else (like from username to username1) and log her in, then try loading Winamp and playing something. If it's fixed, then something in her profile got borked; go ahead and copy her files and favorites from her old profile folder you renamed into the one that Windows just created.
If it still fucks up... I'm not sure what to suggest.
(If you want the old profile back for whatever reason, you can just rename it back to what it was.)

Pretty sure that depends on whether Winamp is configured to use DirectSound or WaveOut.Braedley wrote:The volume of winamp is also controlled by one of the sub controls in the system volume control (wav I think, but not sure). Yep, it was that one. I found it on my own yesterday, but it's nice to have things confirmed. Thanks.Braedley wrote:The volume of winamp is also controlled by one of the sub controls in the system volume control (wav I think, but not sure). That could be your problem. My profile had WinAmp set to use the DirectSound output, while the GF's side had WaveOut, which is a lot louder. Fixed now.
