Question on some Episode 3 Spanish translation

Post by Darth Ruinus »

I was watchin Episode 3 in Spanish today (sounds cooler in Spanish) and something caught my attention.

In English, Palpatine says something along the lines of "Darth Vader will become powerful than either of us!" Meaning, Vader will become stronger than Yoda and Palpatine.

In Spanish, however, we get "Darth Vader will become stronger than both of us combined!"

So, my question is, which language is telling the truth? English where Vader turns stronger than Yoda and Palpatine, or Spanish, where Vader is supposed to turn stronger than Yoda and Palpatine combined?

I'd have to see the film to be 100% sure, but I think that Palpatine says "Se volverá mucho más poderoso que cualquiera de nosotros", that is about a perfect match for the "either of us" version.

I just checked again and he says "No podran detenerme, Darth Vader se volvera mas poderoso que nos dos juntos"

As someone pointed out, English is the language SW is supposed to be watched in, official I guess, but the idea of Darth Vader being able to take on Yoda AND Palpatine at the same time is just too fucking awesome to let go off.

Well, IIRC, Lucas has a statement in the DVD Extras where he says that had Vader not sustained his injuries he'd have been three times stronger than Palps, but the injuries crippled him to only 80% of Palps. However, I believe Dark Lord has Palps believing that the injuries are really just him being emo and not getting over Padme and that he still has the potential to be stronger. Which when you think about it was probably another reason why Palps didn't teach him the bodysnatcher power and let him have a clone body.

Is there a version of Star Wars in American Spanish (Mexico-Argentina accents or something like that)? That might explain the difference if there are two versions running around.

Or it might just be that I'm plain wrong.

Constantino Romero (suited Vader's voice) more or less makes it work. But then about anyone would be better than the guy they picked to voice Anakin.

When he speaks, after the Windu-out-the-window scene, my first reaction was "man, this guy sounds doped".

I think he means the guy who overdubbed Hayden Christensen's lines in the Spanish dub.
