This is good for Democrats; I think that since it is getting moved to the November ballot, then it won't be in action for the 2008 Presidency. That means that even if it does pass in 2008 (unlikely, considering the opposition), the Democratic Party will have considerable time to challenge it in CourtLOS ANGELES, Dec. 6 — A Republican-sponsored ballot measure that would have changed the way the state apportions its 55 electoral votes will not be eligible for the June primary ballot, its sponsors said on Thursday, in spite of promises a few weeks ago that the initiative would get enough money and signatures to do so.
The sponsors now have their eyes on the November ballot.
The proposal has roused strong opposition from Democrats because it would probably transform California from reliably Democratic in presidential elections and hand the Republican nominee roughly 20 votes from Republican strongholds.
The ballot effort was dogged by questions about who was paying for its sponsorship and accusations that signatures were being gathered among residents of Skid Row here.

Yeah, if this hadn't been a blatant attempt to fuck the Democrats over, I'd have been all for it. The problem is that there are other powerhouse EC states like Texas that still give all their votes to the winner, which is almost certainly going to be Republican.

This had nothing to do with distributing California's votes via the popular of that state. It's the deception that was being pushed to support this, but it really just broke it up into Winner Take All by congressional district.Hawkwings wrote:I'd be all for this if it was instituted nationally. Heck, dispense with the whole electoral college nonsense, and just have a simple popular vote.

I wonder if they really will make a go for it in November. I could see this initiative falling to pieces again like it did a few weeks ago under strenuous attack, and now there isn't the incentive that they might be able to take the White House in 2008 from it.

Don't know what's so good about it. Some folks seem determined to kill all government influence for one of most populace states continues. First we have mandatory term limits in our state only, that give the state zero seniority in Congress, break up our electorial votes, Then there's the fact that other states keep moving their primaries to earlier, and earlier in the year, to minimize the power of the larger states...
