A quick non-spoiler review of the latest Horus Heresy book Legion: Secrets and Lies.
The book focuses on an imperial crusade to bring a planet to compliance, though there are several problems:
- The natives are using "air magicks" against them.
- The very secretive Alpha Legion space marines are operating towards their own agenda on the planet completely autonomous from the main imperial command and for the most part making their prescence as hidden as possible, from both enemies and allies.
- An operative of a secretive cross-species group known only as The Cabal has infiltrated the imperial spy network, working toward a secret goal.
For the most part the book is an average read, with the Cabal bringing back memories of the big galactic conspiracies in the old Inquisition War trilogy. The plot stays away from action for the most part, focusing on espionage secrecy, and hidden plots, and in contrast to other HH books the space marines are not the honourable shock troops that are standard, but hidden soldiers, planning meticulously and striking from the shadows.
The ending combines 2 big revelations into one big twist and really illuminates some of the Alpha Legions darkest secrets.
In summation, average until the ending which left me in a Matrix style "Woah" moment, I consider it worth getting just for the revelations provided in it.
