Well, maybe I was exaggerating a little. But ifthesemolluscs were in my garden, I wouldn't be so quick to kill them.

I love nudibranches. Used to see a lot of them while diving. True most were of the "we're goddamn ugly sausages of brown fleshy substance", but the occasional beautifully patterned and coloured one really made up for it.

It is kind of sad that we find more alien-looking life in our own oceans than we ever seen in most sci-fi.

Wow.... I never thought I'd see a slug that I thought was pretty. But these are awesome. How toxic are they?

When I saw that I had an extremely strong "eww!" moment, followed by a "BURN IT!!!" reaction.

According to my google-fu, they apparently store up the poisons of various sea sponges when they eat the sponges - so anything that tries to eat one gets a big ol' batch of sea sponge toxins right in the mouth.

Poisonous sponges are a new one on me, but there are nudibranches that actually store the nematocysts of consumed sea anemones in their skin. Gives those little buggers a mean wallop.

What sort of garden do you have, hongi? An octopuses' garden by the sea? These things are purely acquatic ( ever seen one dumped on the jetty? ). Very few have methods of getting poison into an attacker that does not try to eat/swallow them.
