Rock Band (2) question

So, since RB2 is compatible with the GH:WT instruments, I picked it up. I'm really enjoying it, probably at least as much as I've enjoyed GH:WT so far. But since I never played the original RB, I find one thing perplexing:

How are you supposed to practice a new song when you unlock a new gig? Up until now, most songs have been easy enough to sightread and get through, though I might only get three or four stars. Even if a song was too tough, I could always drop the difficulty down. Now, though, I've gotten far enough into the game that you can only play gigs on Hard or Expert, and all the new songs are pretty intense. I'd be able to handle them with practice, but even though I can play them in tour mode, they don't show up in the song list. Do I have to fail out of them before it'll let me practice?

They shouldn't. I've always been able to access the songs as soon as I unlocked them for playing, either in challenges or the normal tour.

Also, rent Rock Band 1 to export all the songs from that one.

And even if they don't, just play it. It's not like fans are hard to get.
