I know this will probably result in derisive screams at me for using AVG and advice to simply switch but anyhoo...
My AVG is currently being a bit of a bitch, its always complaining about being out of date and having components in error state but when I tell it to update itself it claims to already have the most up to date versions of the components available.

Re: AVG Antivirus Problems
What version are you using? (As in the number in the "about" popup).

Re: AVG Antivirus Problems
Well . . .that might be part of your problem right there given the free version of the software has since changed to 8.0.

Re: AVG Antivirus Problems
I'm still using the 7.5.xx version on my pre-SP2 Xp machine, and it updates with no glitches (although I had to endure the pestering for the version change for months, I actually didn't do it because it requires SP2).
My XP-SP2 machine is running version 8, again without problems, although I do get error states once in a while, mainly because either my connection is down, or I suspect that sometimes the update site is down or unable to serve the files.
Just keep hitting the update button, or reinstall.
Also, not having the latest update is often considered an error state by the program.
