POLICE have surrounded a house where a suspected gunman has holed up in after an exchange of gunfire in the New Zealand North Island city of Napier, which has reportedly seen one civilian and three police shot, one officer fatally.
It is believed there is only the wanted man inside the house near the city's botanic gardens, the NZCity website of radio station NewsTalkZB reports.
It is believed the shooting started when police were executing search warrants on a house suspected of being a gang headquarters.
The New Zealand Herald reports that three officers have been shot and one killed, but police have not confirmed any casualties.
Two of the shot officers have reportedly been admitted to hospital and are in a serious condition and a stable condition respectively.
The civilian casualty is reported to also be in a stable condition.
A witness told nzherald.co.nz that she heard a series of gunshots about 9.30am local time followed by 10 minutes of silence and then another series of shots.
Police have told people nearby stay inside.
Some business owners in the vicinity of the incident have been told not to open.
