"I don't think we ever need to talk about time travel again," Orci explained, saying that Leonard Nimoy and other "original universe" cast members will likely be unnecessary from here on out. "In fact, in the end of the movie, the device that allows time travel is destroyed. So we're stuck with this universe we're in now."
"Now we're in this new world," Kurtzman agreed. "And we're just gonna have to live through the unpredictable future."
As for ideas in that universe, Orci explained: "We've had a couple of really preliminary conversations, but we really didn't want to [get ahead of ourselves], because this isn't something we invented. We wanted to see what fans think of the first one; let's see what works, and what people think is the best in what we've done. And then we can take that into account when we think about the next movie."
Asked how soon they'd start writing the "Trek" sequel if the first one is announced as a hit the Monday after opening weekend, Orci said: "That day."
"I'm already going back and reading some of the books I've missed," he said of "Trek" tales and fan-fiction that have been written in past years, which could be reinterpreted for their new universe. "I'm trying to read every 'Star Trek' book I can get my hands on. We did that a lot for the first movie. ... I'm starting to re-immerse myself again in what's come before."

Tim is Tasmanian, so he needs calm, gentle assurance.
There, there Tim, remember how good the film was? The sequel is gonna be even better, and I'm not sure that's even possible.

He's just saying he's mining past Trek stories for inspiration. And there are good books and stories they can use for the next movie.
Or they can do my idea of Kirk and Khan teaming up to stop an assimilated Dominion battleship from firing a hypersubspace warhead at the Federation's new Invincible-class Earth Defence Battlestation. It'll be awesome. Spoiler
The villain is a Tribble carrying the Katra of Sybok

Oh, Bounty, you big kidder. Of course it'll be awesome, because no hypersubspace warhead can penetrate the Invincible-class's invincible-class shields.

The Enterprise rocks violently as the purple superconcussion missiles pound her soft, yielding shields. Kirk stumbles, hands groping wildly for the physical and emotional support his falling body craves, when he lands gently on the smooth, toned chest of the man he once considered his greatest enemy. "There, there, captain", the rich voice booming voice susses, "rest you head on my ample manly bosom. I shall protect you".
At the other end of the bridge, a single tear rolls down Spock's stoic face.

Actually...that does genuinely sound awesome to me. But then i'm a fan of Grant Morrison so maybe the Tribble-Vulcan hybrid does it for me.

You are what is wrong with fandoms everywhere.

Craziest trekfic I ever read was a 'sanctioned' story in a Strange New World book, in which the crew of the E-D disappear and the big girl is all alone in some pocket universe, where other ships have been stranded in a similar way. The E-D main computer realizes that the only way it can figure out how to get out of the mess is to become self aware, which it does by breaking a mirror. It then spends about five years pondering the situation before magically returning to where and when it had left the known universe, leaving the crew none the wiser.
So yeah, excuse me if I fear the reaper.

Yeah, i know, i'm actually a Mutant with the power to multiply myself infinitely. I've slowly infiltrated every fandom everywhere on the internets and i'm bringing down their standards one day at a time. The other guys in the Brotherhood of Mutants call me "Fan Boi", though frankly i wanted "Bloodfist" or "Shattersword". Oh well...
Next target: Fringe.

Dude, please include a quote in posts like this! I can't tell if you're referring to Bounty's first sample or his, er, second. And I'm scared. So scared.

So we finally have Trek writers who understand that overuse of time travel basically destroys suspense? It's about fucking time. One would have thought that they would have figured that out after "Year of Hell" when they just push the reset button at the end.

I think it's telling that it took writers from OUTSIDE of Trek (at least, they came to it from outside) to come to that conclusion, and to implement it.

That's funny. They destroyed the time travel device... Uh huh.
Did they kill Old Spock? Because last time I checked, he has the process for time travel memorized.

Happy dance! Time travel stories are often too much trouble to write. And having watched "Back to the Future" and "City on the Edge of Forever" doesn't mean you A) Understand time travel B) Can write a compelling story involving time travel.
I liked how in the movie they explicitly stated that time-travel was not a 'reset' button but rather a 'goodbye' button. Travel back in time and say goodbye to your history because it wont work out that way again.

Ah, but has/will Spoke Prime have a Doc Brown moment: "I wish I'd never invented that infernal machine/travelling through time has become too painful"
EMOTIONALLY COMPROMISED!
btw DWong, in case I missed it in other threads, have you a.) seen it and b.) planned a review like you have the last two ST features? Fair go!

Simple solution -- keep Spock await from any Earth automotive museums that happen to have a Delorean DMC-12 in their collection...

They'd have to do something about the original timeline too though because they leave the door open for some future director to do "Another" crossover.
I vaguely remember a fanfic where someone wrote on the premise that cumulative time travel wears down the fabric of tthe universe and caused a lot of the anomaies Federation ships kept running intto and janeway F'ed everything up once and for all by bringing her future weapons back.
the way they reboot the ST universe was more like how you used to degauss your TV. You can't let that crap build up again.

Not to mention that almost every time-travel story seems to have a different source for time-travel;
naturally occurring 'anomalies', omnipotent energy being, future tech, warp slingshot around a gravity well, etc.
