I really enjoyed the Eye of the Needle review, having watched it over thirty times since it went up on YouTube. By the way, your mocking laughter is always faintly sadistic. Sounds very cool.

I will admit that I tend to avoid Mirror Universe episodes. I don't even try watching them on DS9. My only reason for watching this episode when it first came out is because I like darker stories. I was quickly turned off because I like good darker stories.

The best way to think about Eye of the Needle is as what I like to call a "Going for the Early Knockout" Episode. Shows that have their characters have a goal often do an episode early on where they get a chance to accomplish the goal early. By the end of the episode, it gets snatched away, just to illustrate what a long, hard road our heroes have ahead of them.

Yeah, but the thing is that Voyager had several such episodes early on in the series, probably to the tune of at least one a season. I don't have any episode names to back it up, but it seems common enough to say that it was another story churned out of the plot-o-matic.

Almost makes me want to track this episode down and watch it.

I think it was more than that. I remember thinking at one point of how similar it was getting to Gilligan's Island.

I don't remember the episode well, but did anyone in "Eye of the Needle" mention that if they did beam over to the Romulan ship, there's a nonzero chance they'll spend the rest of their lives as Romulan prisoners?

Not to my knowledge. I mean, the Romulans were willing to take appart Data for cybernetics advances and held the crew of Enterprise-C indefinately- I can imagine them holding all the Feds simply because they have knowledge of the next 20 years. That might be very useful.

It occurs to me that, given the "divergent timelines" interpretation of Star Trek time-travel, even successfully sending a message back in time to the Federation would do nothing to get the crew of the Voyager out of their predicament. They'd just spin off yet another alternate timeline in which Voyager didn't go to the Delta Quadrant while the crew in the instigating timeline would be no less stuck.

Except they already created a branching time line just by talking to the captain. Essentially they are dooming another version of themselves to be stuck in the Delta Quadrant.

They most certainly would have. Just being able to interrogate Voyager crew members for technical data on Federation advances would be worth it to the Romulans, much less getting to know the events of the next twenty years before they happen.

Voyager: So retarded, we'd walk right into a Romulan prison for the rest of our lives while leaving our ship behind for Delta Quadrant morons to scavenge.
