Pre Abrahms Trek question about Kirk's history
I don't think this particular question was brought up in the main movie thread, so I thought I'd see if anyone here knows anything. Has any pre 2009 TOS era Trek ever mentioned anything about Kirk's history as a junior officer before he became a Captain? I know Abrahms reboot has him graduating the academy with the rank of captain, but this isn't the original story, right? Has his history as a lower ranking officer ever been mentioned before? I seem to want to remember that it has, but I'm not positive. Anyone?

He served under Captain Garrovick on the Farragut before the Vampire Cloud attacked it (Memory Alpha says he was a Lieutenant at the time and it was his first deep space assignment).

From Memory Alpha:
He was an Ensign on the Republic with Lt. Ben Finney. When Finney almost destroyed the ship, Kirk logged it, and Finney dropped to the bottom of the promotion list. (Court Martial)
While on the Farragut as a Lieutenant, he visited Neural (Tyree's planet), and recommended non-interference (circa 2255). (A Private Little War)

Re: Pre Abrahms Trek question about Kirk's history
As a midshipman cadet, James Kirk was on the diplomatic mission to Axanar, site of some previous significant Federation victory won by Capt. Garth ("Whom Gods Destroy"). Later, as an ensign on the training vessel USS Republic, he closed a reactor circuit which otherwise would have caused the ship's destruction as the result of the carelessness of Ens. Benjamin Finney ("Court Martial"). Later, as a junior lieutenant on the starship Farragut, he went on the first mission to Neural and made the recommendation regarding the native culture which led to the Prime Directive ("A Private Little War"). At Tycho IV, Kirk froze for just a second or two at the phaser station when the ship was attacked by the vampire-cloud creature native to that planet, which invaded the ship and killed half the crew including the captain and most of the ship's senior officers. Kirk was injured from extreme blood-loss but survived, for years afterward blaming himself for the tragedy ("Obsession"). He did a stint as an instructor at Starfleet Academy ("Watch out for Lt. Kirk! In his class, you either think or sink") for a time ("Where No Man Has Gone Before"), but it is not specified if it was before or after his service aboard the Farragut. Kirk had seen first-hand the results of a Klingon occupation of a primitive world ("Errand Of Mercy"). At some point, he gained a command but it is not specified whether it was the Enterprise or some lesser ship, on which also served his best friend, Lt. (later Cmdr.) Gary Mitchell ("Where No Man Has Gone Before").
