WARNING: The following is an “Opinionated Editorial, gathered from my perceptions of the current political make up. It is a political rant by yours truly and may not necessary be based on facts , as they are thought of on the forum. If it is decided this is not the place for such an opinionated post, I welcome this being moved elsewhere
Long ago In a far away place, the “Conservative Movement” took shape. The party stood for “Small government, low taxes, fiscal responsibility and good Christian morals.” Today, the Modern Republican party is drastically different from the party of Lincoln or Teddy Roosevelt. At one point the Republican Party served an important roll in America and served as a Balance to the Democrats of the time.
Times change however and the GOP More and more has become the party of Extremists, no-nothings and selfish individuals. In almost every regard it has ceased to be a constructive part of America, indeed the primary theme of his ‘Op-Ed’ is the Republican party as it stands no longer contributes anything of benefit to America or society at large.
The Conservative movement as it is, is made up of several groups. Business Elitist, Libertopians, Fundies, and several others. Each group is driven by their own desires, their own passions and self-interests. It seems increasingly the case that None of these interests contribute constructively to America’s long term well ebing.
The Business Elite are your ENRON, your Wal-Mart, and countless other large corporations. Their primarily purpose is to make money in the short term and screw anyone else down the line. Weather its in Health care, Insurance, automotive or blue-collar business,. They use the lion share of their political and capital power to:
Lower Taxes, decreased government oversight, decreased regulation, promote Anti Unions and anti organized labour and regulation against all forms of Lawsuites.
While in small doses the above have merit, most of ‘the business elite’ take almost all of these to the extreme, to the point that they cease to offer any long term benefit to America or the Economy.
There is of course the Libertopians, who if they had it their way, would largely abolish government, as always putting absolute faith into the mythical ‘free market’ to solve all of the nations problems. They use all their political power to usually have laws repelled. Gun restrictions? Speed Limits? Federal regulation of industry? That’s all none of your business!
Even in small less extreme doses, the constant cry of “No oversight, no regulation, no controls, no government” offers nothing of any help to a stable America.
And of course, perhaps most powerful, is the religious fundis. They are perhaps the driving force in the conservative movements these days and work tireslly to fight against anything that either makes them uncomfortable, or that they can’t control. I don’t even want to paint a picture of the world they would want to bring about, but all the political power they have goes into trying to pull America back to a mythical time when everything was sunshine and happiness and no one had any ideas of their own that weren’t taught form the all knowing bible.
Obviously, not all ‘conservatives’ are devoid of a sense of how to benefit America. Now all huge corporations live to screw over employees and make a quick buck, not all small government believers think we need NO government. And not all Religious types, despite believing in a magic sky pixie, are actively out to dictate your moral lifestyle.
But these people are not in power, those ‘in charge’ of the republicans, of the Far Right, the Cheney’s, the Pat Robertson’s, the Limbaugh’s , they hold power, they dictate what is done and people like them push their agendas into American politics. Agendas that at this point have no benefit to anyone except their own interests.
This is why I welcome the Republican Party continuing to dissolve into obscurity, for the past 20 years they have largely ruled this country unopposed and have driven it into a series of wars and economic blunders. Not everything is their fault, but while they have not been responsible for everything that is wrong, I can not think of anything they have done that has truly made America any better.
