Kidnapped girl found ALIVE 20 years later

PLACERVILLE, Calif. — Authorities say an alleged kidnapper fathered two children with the woman who emerged 18 years after being snatched from a bus stop.

The new details came as authorities provided more information about the saga Jaycee Lee Dugard, who vanished when she was 11 years old and turned up at a police station in Northern California this week.

El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar says the woman spent most of her time in sheds, tents and outbuildings to isolate her from the world. Police say her captor was Phillip Garrido. He is being held for investigation of kidnapping, rape by force, lewd and lascivious acts with a minor and sexual penetration.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A woman who was snatched from a bus stop as an 11-year-old child in 1991 turned up at a California police station after 18 mysterious years, and a convicted sex offender and his wife were arrested in the kidnapping.

Jaycee Lee Dugard was reunited with her mother, who was overjoyed to learn the daughter she feared dead was actually alive.

It was not immediately clear how Dugard spent the 18 years since she was abducted as a blond, ponytailed child outside her South Lake Tahoe home.

Police said she recently walked into a Northern California police station with Phillip Garrido, 58, one of her alleged captors. He and his wife Nancy Garrido, 54, were arrested for investigation of kidnapping and conspiracy on Wednesday, police said.

Phillip Garrido is also being held for investigation of rape by force, lewd and lascivious acts with a minor and sexual penetration, said Jimmie Lee, a spokesman for the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department.

Phillip Garrido was sentenced to 50 years in prison and served nearly 11 years in Nevada for a federal kidnapping conviction, said Suzanne Pardee, a spokeswoman for Nevada state prisons.

He also served seven months concurrently for a conviction for rape by force or fear at the medium-security Northern Nevada Correctional Center. Pardee said Garrido was paroled in August 1988.

A public records search showed Garrido as president of a company called God's Desire.

Dugard was in good health when she came into a San Francisco Bay area police station and revealed her name.

"We're 99 percent sure it's her," said sheriff's Lt. Les Lovell of the El Dorado Sheriff's Department, who was a detective assigned to help investigate the kidnapping in 1991. DNA tests were being conducted.

California corrections officials said they called in Phillip Garrido for questioning Wednesday after receiving a report that he was seen with two small children at the University of California, Berkeley.

Two children and two adult women accompanied him to the station.

"The diligent questioning and follow-up by the parolee's agent of record led to Garrido revealing his kidnapping of the adult female," the department said in a statement. "It was further revealed by Garrido that she was Jaycee Lee Dugard, and that the children were his."

It was not immediately clear who was the mother of the children.

FBI spokesman Joe Schadler said the woman was reunited with her mother Thursday morning. He declined to provide details.

The suspects were being held in El Dorado County. Jail records showed Nancy Garrido was being held on $4.195 million bail and Phillip Garrido was not eligible for bail because he is a parolee.

A house in the city of Antioch where the Garridos live was cordoned off with police tape as it was searched by FBI agents and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department.

Neighbor Helen Boyer, 78, described the Garridos as nice and friendly and said they cared for Phillip Garrido's elderly mother.

"If I needed something, they would be the first I would call on," Boyer said.

Dugard's stepfather, Carl Probyn, 60, said he was overwhelmed by the news that Dugard was alive. He said for years he had done everything he could to help find her, especially because he knew suspicion had fallen on him.

"It broke my marriage up. I've gone through hell, I mean I'm a suspect up until yesterday," he told The Associated Press at his home in Orange, Calif. "I'm the last person to see her."

Witnesses reported that a vehicle with two people drove up to Dugard and abducted her while her stepfather watched on June 10, 1991.

Probyn said he saw someone reach out and grab her before the car sped away.

"As soon as I saw the door fly open, the driver's door, I jumped on my mountain bike and I tried to get to the top of the hill but I had no energy. I rode back down and yelled at my neighbor, 911!" he recalled.

Probyn said his wife, from whom he is separated, was devastated by the kidnapping. He said for 10 years after the crime, she would take a week off work at Christmas and on the anniversary of the abduction and spend the time crying at home.

The case attracted national attention and was featured on TV's "America's Most Wanted," which broadcast a composite drawing of a suspect seen in the car.

Probyn eventually lost hope that he would ever see his stepdaughter alive. He said he was struggling to understand why Dugard didn't come forward earlier.

"I have a million questions, but I'm just delighted," he said.

Lovell said investigators have been working the case consistently since the abduction and new leads had surfaced over time.

"You bet it's a surprise. This is not the normal resolution to a kidnapping," he said.
I'm watching this on the news right now. The guy is batshit crazy, and apparently he had a box that let him talk to god. The whole time the girl was in his home he was on parole being checked on regularly, but he had a secret 2nd shed in his backyard. To top it off, he fathered two children by the poor girl.

It's just.. wow.

There was a kinda similar case a couple of years ago in Austria: Natascha Kampusch.

There is not really anything you can say about cases like these - people doing this are best described as "bat-shit insane", even if they are apparently able to function in a normal society.

Oh, and will there be an outrage about "lax parole standards"?

Eighteen years of her life wasted and abused. That's fucking terrible; I hope she can recover as much as possible and try to lead a normal life. Not sure I'd bet on it though. :(

An earlier report seemed to suggest that the woman walked into the police station on her own, which made me wonder , "Why now?" But if she accompanied that fucker after he was called in by the police, then it seems like nothing more than good fortune for her. I can just imagine the threats he may have pounded into her if she ever tired to get away, especially after she had 2 children by him: "Go to the cops and I'll kill the kids!

If he's lucky the cops WON'T put him in general pop. Which is far less than the fucker deserves.

He and his bitch should also be sued for everything they have and much more. Every dime that this bastard sweats out should go towards his victim and her family.

Eighteen fucking years. Eighteen years of abuse, rape, and fear. Bloody hell. :finger:

A few facts:

1. The fellow ran some kind of Christian business, "Gods Desire", registered in April of 2008. The very name there makes me think of ++http://www. ++biblicalpolygamy.com/ (link broken intentionally) Biblical Polygamists and the sort of language they use.

2. He talked about leaving business behind entirely to become a minister.

3. He lived with this girl for eighteen years, fathered two children by her...

4. ...And she was apparently with her two kids and him and his legal wife handing out religious literature on a college campus. Due to an altercation over this (Go atheists, you saved someone's life!) the campus police responded, got his ID, ran it, found out he was a convicted child molester... Apparently in California that brings up parole issues for sex offenders, so they called him in, and that's when the case blew open.

Possible thought? She wasn't trapped or confined against her will for more than a short time initially, but rather was kidnapped and religiously brainwashed to believe that now that he'd had sex with her she had to be his second wife under biblical old testament law.

If someone in the community hadn't spotted and called in Elizabeth Smart's citing in Sandy, Utah this might have been her story as well.

I'm glad she finally was able to get away from that monster. My only wonder is how did he manage to have the children get the legal papers needed to keep mom's situation off the radar? My other thought is I hope that she got the proper care for the pregnancy and birth, but I seriously doubt it.....

I understand they've already charged her with kidnapping and conspiracy.

Yeah, it looks like he was some kind of Biblical polygamist crazy.
UC Berkeley police efforts led to kidnap arrest

By TERENCE CHEA (AP) – 54 minutes ago

BERKELEY, Calif. — Two quick-thinking police employees at the University of California, Berkeley described Friday how they set in motion Jaycee Lee Dugard's release after nearly two decades of captivity when they encountered her alleged captor on campus.

Phillip Garrido, who was distributing bizarre religious material with two girls in tow, seemed incoherent and mentally unstable, Lisa Campbell said. The girls wore drab-colored dresses, were unusually subdued, had unnaturally pale complexions and appeared robotic and rehearsed when they spoke, she said.

Campbell also wondered why the girls weren't in school.

"There were some things about him and the kids that were really alarming, that just didn't settle right with me," said Campbell, who previously worked as a police officer in Chicago and a background investigator for the Los Angeles Police Department.

So she and colleague Ally Jacobs notified Garrido's parole officer, who was surprised to hear the parolee had two young daughters and ordered the suspect to report to his office.

On Wednesday, Garrido arrived to see the parole officer with his wife, the two girls and a woman who initially identified herself as Allissa. She turned out to be Dugard and investigators said Garrido confessed to kidnapping her from her South Lake Tahoe neighborhood in 1991 when she was 11.

Campbell, who manages special events for Berkeley campus police, said the 58-year-old Garrido and the two girls — ages 11 and 15 with blond hair and blue eyes — first came to her office Monday because he wanted to hold an event related to a group called God's Desire, saying it involved the government and was going to be "really big."

Campbell scheduled a Tuesday meeting with Garrido and notified Ally Jacobs, a campus police officer. Jacobs ran a record check on Garrido and discovered he was a registered sex offender who had been convicted of rape and kidnapping more than 30 years ago.

Jacobs, who sat in on Tuesday's meeting, said she was also increasingly suspicious when she met Garrido and his daughters.

Garrido gave them copies of a book he had written called "Origin of Schizophrenia Revealed." He told them about his rape and kidnapping convictions but said he had turned his life around.

When Jacobs asked the girls about school, she said they responded "like robots" that they were in 4th and 9th grades, were home-schooled by their mother and had a 29-year-old sister at home. When Jacobs asked the younger girl about a bump on her eye, "she immediately replied with this very rehearsed response, 'It's a birth defect.'"

"They seemed a little out of touch with reality and robotic," said Jacobs, 33. "I just got a weird uneasy feeling."

When the younger daughter stared at her, Jacobs said, "It was almost like she was looking into my soul. That's how her eyes were so penetrating. And she had this smile on her face."

Jacobs said she let Garrido and the girls leave after their roughly 15-minute meeting on Tuesday because she couldn't find any reason to detain him, but she called his parole officer to express her concerns.

Jacobs recalled that before Garrido left, he grabbed his older daughter and said, "'I'm so proud of my girls. They don't know any curse words. We raised them right. They don't know anything bad about the world.'"

I like his brother's reaction.
"It just seems so bizarre, but I can believe it," 65-year-old Ron Garrido told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I know my brother, and I can believe he did that... He's a fruitcake."
