Man 'Tried To Kill Mohammed Cartoonist'

Danish police have shot a terror suspect who broke into the home of the cartoonist whose depictions of the Prophet Mohammed caused riots around the world.

Police say the 28-year-old - who was armed with a knife and axe - was trying to kill Kurt Westergaard.

The intruder was linked to Somali terror organisation al Shabaab and al Qaeda leaders in east Africa, the Danish Security and Intelligence Service PET said in a statement.

He was shot twice and will be charged with two counts of attempted murder after also attacking a policeman.

Mr Westergaard said he pressed a panic button and fled to the safe room in his Aarhus home with his five-year-old granddaughter.

"I locked myself in our safe room," Mr Westergaard, 74, told the Danish news agency Ritzau.

"He tried to smash the entrance door with an axe.

"He used insults, I don't remember which, but it was bad language. He spoke poor Danish and he wound up saying he'd be back."

"My grandchild did fine," Mr Westergaard told the newspaper Jyllands-Posten. "It was scary. It was close. Really close. But we did it."

Mr Westergaard's home is protected by tight security, including a panic line to local police and regular patrols by officers.

Chief Supt Morten Jensen, from East Jutland police, said: "A personal alarm was received from Mr Westergaard's house."

Officers found the man "armed with an axe and a knife in either hand".

The security service said the intruder had been involved in a "terror-related network" that had been under investigation in connection with threats to Westergaard.

"PET looks very seriously upon this case which once again confirms the terror threat directed against Denmark and the cartoonist Kurt Westergaard in particular," PET chief Jakob Scharf said in the statement.

"He broke a window of Mr Westergarrd's house. He tried to attack one officer with an axe and he was shot in his right leg and his left arm," Chief Supt Jenson said.

Denmark's Ritzau news agency said bomb experts carried out a thorough search of Mr Westergaard's home in case a device had been planted.

The Danish cartoonist caused fury in the Islamic world in 2005 after the newspaper published his drawings of Mohammed wearing a turban in the shape of a bomb.

There were violent protests in many Islamic countries and dozens of deaths in Nigeria, Libya and Pakistan.

Demonstrators burned Danish flags in protests that culminated in February 2006 with the torching of Danish diplomatic offices in Damascus and Beirut.

Mr Westergaard also received numerous death threats.

Does anyone have a good timeline on how the whole Danish cartoons rioting went down? If I remember right, the riots didn't actually start when the cartoons were published; they started a couple of months later, when some assholish imams from Denmark went to the Middle East and started showing them around.

Either way, it pisses me off that this guy can't live without constantly being on guard from assassination from a host of fundamentalist Islamic shitheads from all over the world.

Danish police are armed. Offhand I’m only aware of Ireland, Norway and Japan besides the famous UK routinely having unarmed police on duty as far as developed countries go though more may well exist. Its more common in the third world when police cant afford guns, but luckily local people usually can’t afford machetes.

Fundies of any ilk are categorically incapable of seeing any irony in their actions. For example, pastors and other would-be preacherscan go on and on and on about how any inflammatory statements they make is "done out of honest love" and "not meant to be offensive at heart" and other such bullshit and then go completely batshit if someone dares to give even the most gentle criticism of what they believe.

The story never gained much media attention, and the State Department has neither confirmed nor denied the story. Regardless, there is considerable evidence that it did happen, and it almost worked. Most information about the assassination attempt stems from one original story published in The Australian, that cannot be independently verified, so the truth of the situation remains elusive. However, it should be clear something happened.

A recent related incident has shed more light on the situation. The recent attempted assassination of cartoonist Kurt Westergaard was reported by a Danish newspaper to be connected to Clinton. The perpetrator of the attempt, an unidentified Somali man who was shot and detained by Danish police is reported to have been the same person who made an attempt on Clinton in Kenya. The same article claims the "28-year old" also has "close ties to al-Shabaab," the organization responsible for the Kenya incident, if it happened.

I myself hadn't heard about the incident with Secretary Clinton, and if its true it obviously raises some serious questions.
