Hong Kong acid attacks

Nine tourists and a child were among 30 people injured in an acid attack in a busy street in Hong Kong.

More than 100 people have been injured in similar attacks since December 2008 when bottles of acid were dropped from buildings in a pedestrian zone.

The latest attack was at the Temple Street night market in Yau Ma Tei when two bottles were thrown, state broadcaster RTHK reported.

The 30 people suffered light injuries and were treated in hospital.

Police were investigating, with firemen also on the scene, but no arrests had been made, AFP reported.

In December six people were injured when a bottle of acid was thrown down a street in Causeway Bay, a shopping hub which was packed with people celebrating the Hong Kong football team's victory over Japan in the East Asian Games final.

Police have previously offered 1.5 million Hong Kong dollars (£120,000; $190,000) for useful information on the attacks.

A rooftop camera network was set up over Mong Kok, the site of one attack, has failed to catch those responsible.
Holy crap, how long has this been going on? The article says it goes back over a year, but has it been going on longer? And who's doing this and why? Any ideas at all? Are these just random attacks by gangs? The only acid attacks I'd heard of before this were very targeted ones, usually at women in those societies where they're basically property and are killed regularly for "honor," usually because they dared to have a boyfriend or something like that. Anybody know more about this?

A quick search on google (search terms: Hong Kong acid attacks) reveals that this is at least the sixth acid attack of its kind in Hong kong in the last year:

Hong Kong police say they were investigating a fifth acid attack in a year after six people were injured by a bottle of corrosive liquid in a bustling shopping district.

The plastic bottle was hurled in Causeway Bay on Saturday, one of the city's busiest areas, around 10 pm (1am today, Australian time), a police spokeswoman told AFP.

Five women and a man suffered burns and were sent to hospital for treatment. One of the women's face and chest were badly injured, with burns covering nearly 20 percent of her body.

Causeway Bay was packed on Saturday night with people celebrating the Hong Kong football team's shock victory over Japan in the East Asian Games final at a nearby stadium.

Detectives are investigating but "it remains unclear whether the case is linked to the previous acid attacks", the spokeswoman said.

Prior to the latest case, there have been four acid attacks in Hong Kong since last December. Three of the previous attacks took place in densely populated Mong Kok, another busy shopping quarter.

Forty-six people were injured in the first attack in December last year when two bottles of corrosive liquid were tossed from a building into the street.

One of the Mong Kok incidents in September was believed to be over an unpaid debt and the attacker was detained at the scene. But there have been no arrests in the other cases.

In May, Chief Executive Donald Tsang pledged to catch the culprits and offered 300,000 Hong Kong dollars ($A13,962) for information leading to the arrests of those involved.
note: this article was reporting the previous attack mentioned in the OP's article, so that is five attacks plus this new one.

Bizarre, is all I can say. The incident that resulted in an arrest seems to me to indicate that these are separate incidents. Are acid filled bottles the new Molotov Cocktail or something?
